Sumpter Railroad Case Heard ' v - , Salem Following the filing of af fidavit by the Baker County White Pine Lumber company, in which it was stated that the Sumpter Valley Railroad is charging the 25 per cent , increase in freight rates when such increase is not sanctioned by the pub-, lie service commission, the case is be ing heard in circuit court here.- It is said that the railroad company is mak ing an effort to get back under Fed eral control and that in the meantime it ignored the authority of the com mission. . ' . Telephone Companies May Consolidate Portland The consolidation of the Home and Sell telephone companies is being urged as a remedy for the poor service caused by insufficient la bor. It is claimed that the automatic system which! may he installed upon consolidation, will in large part solve i the problem. ', ' Cancels Physical Examinations Portland Local draft board No. 3 has cancelled all physical examina- ' tions until further notice. . This fol lows the ' recommendation of city health officials'. Furniture Patterns Curtailed. Portland. Following the ruling of the war industries board, local furni ture manufacturers will make no fur niture on new patterns and will curtail nil present patterns 60 per cent .It is claimed that the output may be larger under this provision.
