Karl Lynch arrived in the city yesterday fron Oklahoma, anil intend mnking their future homo in La Grande. The. ontire pressure from the Mor gan I.akc pipe lino is controlled by a needle valve as it enters, the power. plant in Mill canyon. But it is nota Cambric needle, neither is it a darning needle that the Eastern Oregon Light & Power Company uses at that par ticular place. It is a steel needle about eight inches in diameter at the largest point and tapers to a reason, ably sharp end. That fits into a cast ing to, tijrhtly that it becomes water tighbt arid when the needle is raised and, lowered the water is perfectly controlled. I.iko all needles, this one gives some trouble. . The water wears jt until the surface is no longer perfect and then trouble follows. Such is the condition j at the present time, for pie needle and casting are up for repair. ' ; . f" Such repairs as this is where the. acetylene welding process is of great value and the town or community without olTe or more of these plants is out of luck. At the Lcighton garage an acetylene plant works most of the time and it has been busy repairing the particular needle and casting men Honed. Mr. Leighton dons;, his gog gles, -which makes; him look; like' one of those demons mentioned jn Dante's Inferno as he stands in the reflection of tho blow-torch. ,: As .the heat in tensifics he builds a new point to the needle, resurfaces the face of the cr ing, which, when on the lnthe can be turned down to a perfect fit. The work requires skill, as does all ace tylene welding, but it is highly satis factory and saves many a long wait, which would be necessary if parts had to bo forwarded from factories. Constable I. ' Welding shops throughout the coun try will ball with delight a new solder that will repair aluminum and make it stay fixed. It is always a problem in a welding' shop when a piece of alum inum comes In for repairs becauso the solders used on other metals will not tnnke good on the white metal. ' So many times did he meet up with this condition that R. W. Leighton, of the Leighton garage, set to work about four years ago to mix a solder that would hold. At spare time ever since ho has experimented until now he has a solder that will hold. In fact it will fill a crack in an aluminum break so well that a file or a cold chisel is required to remoVo it.
