Portland people are calling for the
savingof all tin foil, which, comes
around tobacco packages, candy etc.,
foe the benefit of the Der. Cross so
ciety. Receptacles have been placed
in many prominent places, and lied

vuluablc to the government in making
certain classes of war munitions. '
In La Grande it has long been the
custom to save tin foil for the use of
the Red Cross,, and there are recep
tacles in almost every prominent
place in the city.

gers, shipbuilder of Astoria, and for
mer mayor of Salem, wants to use
cenvicts to bui!(l ships. In a letter
received by the state of board of con

satisfied that free labor would not
object to convicts working in the
yards, and he states he is willing to
give full pay for their services.
At least five days ahead of the of
ficial date of launching under the
contract, the steamer Western Plains
was floated by the Columbia River
Shipbuilding Corporation at- -4:13
o'clock Friday afternoon in Portland,
milking the ninth of the 8800-ton type
to leave the ways there, eight of

Wheat production in Washington
this season, as estimated on the con
dition of tile crop August 1, promises
an increase of 11,1 17,000 bushels over

crop report of the bureau on crop esti

winter wheat shows a falling of from
last year of 1,-1:15,000 bushels, spring
wheat shows a corresponding increase
of 4,552,000.
This season's entire wheat crop for
the state is estimated at S2,.'i:j5,000
bushels, of which 0,4:15,000 is winter
wheat and 22,012,000 spring wheat.
Some one has made a mistake that
bids fair to cost the people of Pen
dleton a considerable sum of money,
whichever method is followed. At the
time the new gravity system was com
pleted and had been, as it was thought,

the insurance companies announced a
reduction in tho insurance rates of the
city of from 10 to 25 per cent. This

standing, either implied or understood,
that the gravity system and the for
mer pumping system would bo used

As time went on the council per

which was the property of the Pacific
Power & Light Co., was taken out und
sent over to Pasco, Wash., where this

Giving as reasons that fire condi
tions in the forests are extremly haz
ardous and that every available man

harvesting the crops, timber owners
and lumber operators have asked Gov
ernor Witliycombe to suspend the
hunting season until climatic condi
tions make disastrous fires ir::possibU.

Shippers of exhibits to the state fair'
j will be allowed to transport them in
one direction free, under a concession
received from the railroad administra
tion, through Senator McNary, accord
ing to announcement made by Secrc
.tary Lea, of the slate fair board. Here
tofore the Southern Pacific has trans
ported the exhibits free both ways,
und, with that exception, the conces
sion granted' places the shipments on
the same basis as they have been in
the past. The railroad administration
recently issued orders forbidding nil
shipments for state, county or city
purposes free. This also covered ship
mcnts for charitable and exhibition
purposes. Shippers of purebred ani
mals also may ship them at relense
valuation, rather than nt full valua
tion, Mr. Lea stated.
