TUESDAY; AUGUST fl, J01S LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER OLDEST LOVE LETTER fOUIHID Modern 8lntlt Declares It to tfeve Been Written AlMut the Time, . of Abraham. j The oldest lovo InM-er In the vorld has been found-xmil -roiiil by eyoa fur which It never wm intended. i r)r Stephen Herbert I,itnglnn, Museum of Art and Bclenrex, University of Penn sylvania, was the mini -to lljul HiIh billet dour, written on n InlilcU nf clny about the time or .Abraham. 'Ho also" has brought to llfii whnt Ik kiK) tn he , the oldest map In existent . ilrnwn about law IS. C. or another tablet or clay. ; Hero Is the letter, which, end to re lute, la partly selfish : , . "To Kuku and Mirslln (iy: - "Thus snlth Hln-iiuiglr. "Slay the Run-dog glife you good health. ... . .: "How is thin business? "For a wliole month fyou hnvo not sent anybody to usl; nhmit my welfare.. "Now I direct Shaoiashcplrl unto 700. "Send me 30 pints of barley meal and ten pints nf bean flour. "I am In trouble. 1 "Give quickly. . 1 "What you send deduct from your tithes. ' , "As to the rest, sftad it according to future Instructions,'' . Evidently the welter was fond of both Kaka and Mlrrfla, two Bisters. Al though the letter , could scarcely be called affectionate, ,'as the present gen- eratlon understands the word, Mts translator assures .us that It Is a boun fide cross-your-heiirt love letter. The map found by Doctor Lnngdon was of Ilabylonlan origin mid Indicates a supposedly sulmrban district Joined together by canals. Rehoboth Sunday Herald. " NO TRUTH IN TRADITION Old Legend of the Drowning of Prin cess In Petroorad Fortress Proved to Be Without Foundation. The fortress' of SS. Teter and Paul, In Petrogrnd, has an evil reputation as the former place of Imprisonment of many of Russia's Idealists, Includ ing Prince Kropotkln 11 nil Madame Breshkovsky ; but one blot on Its 'scutcheon Is removed by nn Illustrated Article in the London Sphere, The Article reproduces a painting by the Itueslnn artist Flavitsky, showing a beautiful woman standing on her bed In a cell in this prison, seeking to es cape the rising waters of a flood that threatens her life. This was the Prin cess Taraknnova, who had Incurred the enmity of Catherine the Oreat. The tradition is that she was drowned, by order of the empress, during the In undation of 1777. The Sphere, how ever, shows that she died of tuberculo sis two years before the flood swept through the fortress. Thus this gloomy prison and the great empress are re lieved of one of the tragedies with which they have been associated. The Outlook. In Praise of Music. Music adds nothing but good; sub tracts the evil; multiplies that which we already have; discounts our ail ments and compounds all of our Inter est. If you believe this Is true, "push" music. Aid the choir, chornl and or chestral societies. Sympathize with nnd in every way support public school music. A foreign traveler In our country said he was deeply Impressed with our fllences. He heurd.no reapers fling ing In the field, he heard many a bird carol, but no human songs. That re minds me of the old saying: "Blessed Is the man who sings nt his work." Take an Interest In crentlng a musi cal atmosphere In the home, and soon America will be singing nnd we shall be nble to take In music not only by the small channel of the enr, hut through every pore of our bodies straight to the root of our souls. The Muslclnn. f Hint to Mothers, ' Let tis never he like the mother who laid her boy was not Interested. In any thing. For the boy's teacher when she called noticed that he had a box which he seemed to take care of, and it was not long before she learned that it was n collection of caterpillars. Yet the mother said that her boy was interested in nothing. The teucher at once showed her pupil that she, too, was Interested In his collection. . She learned from the boy B' gront many things about cnterplllors that she did not know, and in turn taught him things he did not know. Teacher and boy became grcot friends; through this common Interest others sprang up and the boy changed from a sullen inattentive boy to a broad-minded, wide-awake man. If the mother could only have shared her boy's Interest, how much more helpful they would '"have been to each other. Pittsburgh Dispatch. Practice Hindwrltlnfl. For years business people have de pended on the typewriting machine for their letters, and have neglected their handwriting. The derirth of ma chines is now being generally felt, es pecially in commercial houses, and once more it has become necessary to be able to write clearly nnd legibly. For the first time the other day the head of a big business Arm took the troublo to get specimens of the hand writing of his stnff of female clerks. There were scarcely six who could write r really good hand. "People won't take the time to read a busi ness letter unless It is legibly written, was bis querulous comment. Cleaning; Pearls. To clean penrls souk them In a hot loup prepared from bran, with a little cream of tartar and alum. As soon as cool enough, rub the pearls between the bands. Repeat application until discoloration disappears. Then rinse tn lukewarm water and lay pearls on white paper In I dark place to cool. 'Passing the Aentnv. "... When the 'guard at the Inst post j heard the cuptnhi coming he culled, 1 "Halt, who goes there?" Whoever It was that tllsrnvored sleep decided that nt least one-third of a -person's life was properly spent tn bet, and therefore, when the crowd stops up until midnight It Is healthy und wise to remain under cover, or nnyway on the pillows, until eight o'clock. The dancer or card player (certainly we mean bridge and other perfectly proper games)- lingering for the last one-step or the final hand, until one o'clock, should not be dis turbed until nine. And so on, accord ing to the uccepted plan nf health and happiness. But taking the other side of the argument or rather, reversing the-program let the average person retire at ten o'clock and rise at six. Exchange. ' Hl'SIIAM AND WIFE. Mrs. Fran;r . r.
