C. Smith, of Smith's Garage, stated this morning that his sales of automobiles this year is fully onor third less than they were a year ago. Asked what caused this, heavy de crease in business, Mr. Smith replied that1 it is entirely due to government prohibition of the manufacture of any further supply of strictly passenger automobiles and that when there is a chance of getting a car in Portland, the' only way he can jret the car tc La Grande is to fro to Portland and drive the car here on its own wheels. OFF ON A FISHING TRIP. Geo. H. Tracey and U. D. McKcnnon loft this afternoon for a few days' fishing at Minam. They promise to get some trout, rf there are any to tje had, ''Ttnd "their friends- will . be watching for their return. . Why the veil? Merely masculine minds will nerer figure out the answer although they wilt, have the rest of time to ponder the question. Veils were nnd arc and will continue to be. They are a strictly feminine institution and whether they are worn to auu charm to the face or to call attention to -charms already there, or for some other reason, these are mysteries only the veiled lady can solve for us. But they make opportunity for capricious oruumeiitutlon ami for variety two very good reasons, for the . loyalty with which women favor them. . New face veils this summer are near ly all woven .with a large mesh; the hexagon-shaped mesh appears to. lie hest liked. Two examples of this par ticular weave are shown at tho left of the picture. They are clrculur and lloat about the face. The veil at the top Indulges In the caprice of little nnd big chenille dots and little pnstcd-on velvet leaves, all of-them dancing In all the wayward wandering bree7.es they chance to meet. A few dots.splnt- tered over n lovely chin, make us think twice of its delicious curves. A silk annll minders in the most aimless and hnppy-go-lucky way over the veil be llow, but It Just misses the eyes and 'just hits a very alluring pair of Hps, ' which goes to prove that n veil should be taken seriously and adjusted with are. ' - At the left appears the "war bride" Veil one of the small consolations al lowed to the girl whose sweetheart Is away in the service of his country. It Is of navy blue chiffon and Is draped about a navy blue or navy blue and w hite turfan. This one Is finished with a narrow silk fringe, but most of them are simply hemmed.. They are nrohably destined to a short-lived jiop-ularlty-r-but they are very .charming. Veils should be tried on and selected coretiilly as lints are, for some fucet look best tinder a plain, close mesh without figures. Scrolls or dots or oth er, figures In front of the eyes, are never plenslng; they look and are un comfortable. . i.i New Needle Knobs. If the knob on the end of one of your knitting needles of hone or wood comes off and is lost, as sometimes happens, mold a little ball of melted pnraflin, or of beeswax, on the needle. It will harden, and stay on quite well. If yon are knitting lace edging, and have only long steel needles,, cut them short with a wire cutter, add a paraffin knob at one end, and yen have a pair of dainty little lace needles. .
