THE SPORTSMEN'S CLUB
Right in our midst we have a live wire organization
that looks after the sportsmen's interests in this com
munity and also in the adjoining counties. It is the Wing,
Fin and Fleetfoot Club. Tonight is one of its annual
dinners and all sportsmen and their friends are urged to
attend. The State Game Warden will be present, and
an enjoyable time will be had by all. Just now the sub
ject of fisk and game conservation is closely allied with
food'eonservation. The people are just beginning to real
ize that food and game are a valuable resource and should
be protected and preserved. The fact that Union and
Wallowa counties are natural game preserves makes it
important that these matters should be studied. The
Wing, Fin and Fleetfoot Club docs this, besides being an
important factor in the social life of the community. Any
organization that works for the betterment of the com
munity should be supported. This is one.

they arc facing a more serious labor shortage than ever
before. In solving it they will need the help of towns
people and the co-operation of live wire organizations.
This would be a good thing for the Commercial Club to
take up, appoint an efficient and capable committee and
study the question thoroughly and see wherein the city
can be of service to the country. It will not do to leave
this question until the harvest when there will be a great
clamor and demand for labor. The question is one that
jresscs immediately for solution, lie profits most who
serves best, is a good motto for a Commercial Club, for
a Chamber of Commerce, for a. city, or for a business
house.

Union and Wallowa counties must keep everlastingly
pounding away on the subject of good roads. A start has
been made on the state highway through this county,1 on
the La Grande-Joseph road, on the Enterprise-Flora road.
The people of Wallowa county seem to place more value
on the Enterprise-Flora road than they do on the La
Grande-Joseph road, probably because this will bring
them more immediate benefit in facilitating present busi
ness. The La Grande-Joseph road will connect up with
the state highway system and when completed will be one
of the great roads of tho state. No road will do more to
develop Wallowa eountv, to bring in new people, to facili
tate business between the people of the two counties. Let's
sec that it is built.

The O.-W. 11. R. has purchased a
largo gravel quarry near Baker and
will gradually ballast tho Joseph
branch with gravol, and also the
main lino on this division. They
will also put In a half mile of heavy
80-pound rail and fill the gap near
Klgin, It being the intention of the
road to eventually lay heavy 80
pound Iron over tho v. hole division.
