General conditions at tho JPortlimd Union Stock Yards for tho week's opening market have been very favorable to tho shipper. Tho market ha3 shown a spleniild strength in both the cat tle and hog departments, with a sub stantial advance in the ran;:e of prices. While the receipts and vohimo o! business In the cattle department were not largo, the prices werb 25 to 50 cents higher in tho different classes, reaching an 11c top on steers, and an S.50 top on cows. The top steers showed an advance of about 25 to 35 cents whllo common to medium stuff and cows showed an advance of 35 to 50 c. Buying was very active and before the noon per iod arrived the entire offering had changed hands and the yards were cleared. Three or four loads of steers sold for 11c straight, and as many more sold for 10.65 to 10.75. The great bulk of tho steers offered went at 10.00 to 11.00. About six loads of cows sold for 8.60 and as many more at 8.00-8.50. The bulk of tho cows' offered changed hands from 8.00 to 8.50. Common to med ium stuff showed n sharp advance with about half enough supply to meot the domanrts of tho market. The following quotations ore current In tho cattle department: Medium to choice steers, 10.35-11.00; good to medium steers, 9.36-10.35; common to good steers, 7.75-9.25;; choice cows and heifers, 7.75-8.50; common to good cows and heifers, 0.50-7.75; canners, 3.00-0.00; bulls, 5.00-7.50; calves, 7.50-11.00; ntockers and feed ers, jG. 00-9. 00. ' Tho hog market was very active, oxtending to 1G.10 for a top. Tho bulk of the hogs sold at about lfi.00. There were only about two loads of high quality hogs offered on tho market today and the secondary stuff got away with 15.75 and up. This makes the market show an ad vance of 35 to 40c. Tho offering was not sufficient In this market to meet the demands. A heavy increase in shipments would be absorbed In this as well as in the cattle depart ment to a good advantage. Tho quo tations are as follows: Prime light, 15.75-16.00; prime heavy, 15.75- 10.10; pigs, 13.75-14.50; bulk 15.75- 10.00. The sheep market continues steady with tho supply In tho yards and local feed lots cut in two just about the middle within the past two weeks. The movement of dressed lamb is considerably more active, which bids fair to an active sheep market in the early Spring. The current quotations arc: Western lambs, 14.50-15.00; Valley laml, 14.00-14.50; yearlings, 12.50-13.00; wethers, 12.00-12.50; owes, 9.60 10.50. o Shniko ?200,000 reality deal clos ed here. $393,000 contract awarded for South Jetty nt Newport. WEJ-IKIjY MAKKICT r.KVIKW PORTLAND, Jan. 19. Whllo the general run of live stock for tho past week has been lighter than tho offer ing of any week rocontly, the supply in the hog alley was comparatively heavy, amounting to approximately 0090 head, while less than 2000 cat tle or sheep came forward. The shortage in supply has been fairly well responded to by activity in up ward price tendency. Tho market opened the first of the week with a strong tendency showing a sharp incrense in tho cat tle market but tho tendency through out the entire week has been upward In all departments. While prices continued about the name in the hog department, the quality offered was so much lower that an offering of high quality would have justified a 10 to 15 cent raise in quotations. Tho cattle market has been eVt- trcmoly active and tho close of tho weok finds everything selling nt tho top ot the quotations established by a sharp advance on Monday. Every thing points to a continued strength in this section ot tho market and there is no question but that a heavy Increase in tho supply for the coming week will pass the ccaloB on a strong market. The demand for the week has been about three times tho sup ply. The week's market closed with the following quotations: CATTLE Mod. to choice steers, 10.00-10.75; good to medium steers, 8.75-10.00; common to good steers, 7.25-8.75; choice cows and heifers, 7.25-8.00; common to good cows and heifers, fi. 00-7. 35; cannors, 3.00 5.50; bulls, 4.50-7.00; calves, 7.00 10.25; stockers and foeders, 0.00 S.50. There was a pood attendance, and a very inter esting evening1 of reading of letters received from the boys in the service. Tho committee reported that, every boy received a bo.c of sugar and cookies which were made up by the auxiliary and outsiders. Tho members of the auxiliary wish to thank all those who assisted with these boxes.
