When Roger Stone returned to his Southern homo in Myrtlovillo from a northern university, ho found a hearty wnlcomo accorded hlin hy his townsmen, but what cheered him most was the wolcome he saw in tiio beautiful eyes of pretty Uetsy Shel ton, daughter of un old Inipovorished Southorn funilly, who toiled nt a typowrlter to keep llio funilly name from the dlsgraco of accepting chnr lty. And thus began this romance of the sunny South and Southern chlv .niry, so well depicted in tho gripping Triangle drama "The Stalnloss Ilar- rler," which will bo shown at tho . Arcade Sunday only. Suddenly the' airplane sentry stood up, gazed at n distant speck In the sky through his glasses for a few seconds, then blew three blasts upon his whis tle. Before the echoes had died away a furious scene-shifting began in the battery. A Scccnd Invitation. But the sentry re'dotHdcd his vigi lance. The 'mltery bad naole Itself exceedingly unpopular with the Ger man ; It had recently put several of his guns out tif action, besides account ing for a big mlnenweifer that had an noyed the Infantry In the front line, nnd It wiisVvident that he meant to discover Its position somehow. There were several German bnlloons up as It was, though a fortuunte rise In the ground Just hid the btn rv from their view. Nor was it likely that on n day when visibility was se good the enemy would stop nt one ca.-unl airplane. It wns far more likely that he would send them over at Intervals throughout the day. And so It happened. Before nn hour was past a second speck appeared In the sky and again the ncene shifting took place on the blast of the whistle. This time the hostile plane was shap ing n conrse that would bring It very nearly over the buttery, and the sentry watched It with some concern. On it came, the shrapnel bursting furiously round it, diving nnd wheeling to dis concert the gunners' aim. It swept over the battery, went straight on for a few minutes, then turned nnd came back again. Had It seen anything sus picious? The sentry scanned the or rhurd shnrplj. Everything wns In per fect order, not even n bully-beef tin lay about to betray a sign of human oceupntlou ; there were no tracks visi ble across the grass; every trifle was carefully covered up. It is on details like this that the safety of n battery depends. Upon the slightest hint that anything Is hidden In a particular spot the airplane calls up its guns nnd ranges on the place. And ever after ward one has the uncomfortable feel ing that one Is suruoeted and that at ,ny moment a torrent of shell may r rive. Pursued by Shrapnel. The plune was perceptibly lower; It almost seemed ns If Its suspicions must have been aroused. It swept off toward home, pursued by the bursting shrapnel that It dodged ns if by a series of miracles. But suddenly It seemed to quiver, its tall went up, nnd It began to dive steeply- The sentry watched It eagerly through his glusses. Was It n ruse to escape the shell, or was It hit? Slowly the plane began to turn over ns it fell, anil then, all nt once, all control seemed to leave It, nnd it dropped steadily, tinning over and over, the sun Hashing from Its pol ished fusllngo as it did so. Lower und lower It fell, until only n few hundred feet from the ground, when It turned on its side nnd crashed swiftly to earth, a mile or so from the battery. The sentry blew his whistle once more, nnd the battery returned to Its work cheering nnd whistling Every one had seen the machine come to earth and was proportionately elated. But, as always, a chivalrous feeling for their fallen enemy was mingled with the men's Joy. , "Plucky sportsman, that," said one, and the rest echoed his sentiments. FRENCH TROOPS METHODICAL. LY BLIND GERMAN ARMIES (Continued From Pago 1.) lent in a fierce fight lasting into the night. The enemy desperately count er attacked but failed, leaving in all 120 prisoners, including six officers, in tho hands of the Blue Devils. Com plete German losses, high because of their fierce effort to retain a position which they know to be of extreme value, were estimated at least COO men. , The following day a French Gen eral pinned military medals on the blue tunics of two adputants and a corporal for exceptional v valor. Though there were no such medals in the district the General sent a fast automobile to find them, wherever possible, and the little presentation ceremony in an Alsatian village was a happy aftermath to a victory that took from the Germans priceless ob servatories which had bothered the French for two years. Seeing Too Much. The French command next d .'eld ed that the Germans wore seeing too much North of the Chamtn des Dames. Consequently following a brief artillery deluge, four compan ies of poilus passed to the attack against the enemy lines forming a salient between the small river I.I lotto and the route to the German held village of Juvincoiirt as far as the village of Ville-au-Bois. Hore the enemy held valuable observation posts overlooking Juvincoiirt and Juvincoiirt and ground east of the Miettc. Under loW lying clouds and in. a "peasoup" fog, the former prevent ing all aerial work and the litter preventing enemy observation of the advance, the French infantrymen, in less than an hour, swept over posi tions on a front of 1.500 yards and penetrated to a depth of over half a mile. They wiped out the salient, took all tho observatories and cap tured 475 prisoners a number al most equal to halt of the entire at tacking force. Six German officers and 45 under-officers fell into tho net. ! Hellish Fighting. The ' third and most Important French action of November was in a region where constant hellish fight ing has been the dally routine, Hill 344, on tho right bank of the Meuse, North of Verdun. Here a drum-llko artillery roar has never ceased night and day for nearly three months. German attacks and French counter attacks, almost dally since the latter part of August, have had small place in the communiques because of their routine nature. The enemy's posi tions permitted him to make con stant infantry "nibbles" into- tho French lines on the Northern Flank of Hill 344 and to disturb French organization which he could see In the rear. French Strategy. French strategy In eliminating tho enemy's advantageous positions In the region of Hill 344 has probably never been employed before In this war. Taking advantage of the con ditions peculiar to the region French guns of many calibers nt 6:30 Sun day morning, November 25, concen eruted their deluge of steel on a three and one-hnlr kilometer front opposite 344. The thunder of this artillery preparation though vlotenu, was unnoticed amidst the constant med'ly of nir vibrations which had be come a habit to Gorman ears for al most three months. Just four hot'rs after tho beginning of the concentra tion of fire, screened by its own hab itual . noise, at 10:30 A. M., the French guns lengthened Hielr range nnd barraged the German rear while the poilus went over the top. The surprise was complete. Victory was won in several minutes. The French infantrymen in the first waves left tho taking of prisoners to "mopping up" units who followed behind. Tho latter herded 800 dazed Germans to the rear. Enemy losses in dead nud wounded were heaviest. French losses on account of the surprise nature of the attack were extremely light. The advantageous positions which It had taken the enemy over eight weeks to gain were wiped out in not much more than eight minutes. CHICHESTER S PILLS . THE lMAUONI UOAXI).
