MTTI.H SUSS OI'TI.MIST' (Reviewed by George W. Graves Motogrnphy.) The author of "Llttlo Miss Optim ist, Gardner Hunting, has provided Vivian Martin with a "story which contains a dash '01' two of tense mel odramatic coloring, yet one which is :not Without: the litiniaa Interest: and;; wholesomeness that wo have been educated to expect in tho Vivian Mar tin pictures. A story that has hum or, human Interest, suspense ant! ex citing dramatic action, and above all carries conviction, is sure to hold an nudienP for five reels. Such a story "Llttlo Miss Optimist." All these different elements nre found In just tho right proportion nnd tho result is thnt there arc no monotonous or lrnggy spots. Miss Martin plays the role of an optimistic little waif, who, though In mean circumstances herself Is always ready to help those who have fallen by. the wayside. At one time her generosity leads her to give a prec ious battered dlmo to a half-starved young man. This coin flguroB prom inently In tho rest of tho story, fin ally convicting a man of murder arid saving tho falsely accused. A pretty love themo involving the dqwn-and-outcr who becomes suc cessful and the girl, who is finally turned out of her homo, the former being able to reciprocate the Jatter's kindness, runs all tho way thmugh The complication whlcn has the girl's brother accused of murder, dealing with the fateful part of the "lucky dime" has In revealing the identity of the' real murderer, is handled very delicately and coherently. It makes a fine bit of suspenseful melodrama. The fact that the thief nnd the real murderer is outwardly a "pillar of the church" makes any solution seem all tho more hopeless. Robert Thornby's direction, rend ers the whole picture Intelligible and convincing to the spectator. The ac tion Is brisk nnd interesting, nnd nov el offecta in setB, lighting and photo graphy aro noticeable. Tom Moore, one of the best juvenile players on the screen, excels ns the hero. fchiirlcs West',' Ernest Joy, Charles Gerard nnd Helen Bray have con- splcuous parts In the cast. The net" Ing to be seen In the picture Is of a very high standard. "Llttlo Miss Optimist" Is a brisk, well-balanced, thoroughly entertain ing story, with the magnetic star In a rolo thnt will surely please. One Is an heiress, the other is poor and feeble minded. Laura Fairlie. tho heiress, becomes the wife of Sir Peroival Clyde, who marries her for her money and Is ready to stop at nothing In order to get his wife's fortune into his hands. I, The first step Is when be learns of J the escape of Ann Cntherlck from the insane asylum. The woman dies nnd he secures the body. His v.-:fe is ill at the time.
