A Watery Grave.
Almost exhausted by her efforts,

Webb, convinced that Helen and Boy
were both dead, had docked his tug

en called. Hearing her name he took
the telephone and learned to his
amazement sho had escaped: "Take
Jioy to the hospital," Bho directed.
"I'll meet you there."
Webb, with the police, started for

Buck Masters came In, She paused.
He wauled a repair man to restore
the line broken by Boy. Helen, over-

cashier demanded fifty cents for her
toll charge.
Helen realized she hadn't n cent of
money but sho turned her embarrass

"I'll go with hltu and puy."
"Very good, Eddie," smiled the cash
ier, nnd tho repair man with his vol
unteer assistant carrying part of tho
equipment started fur the shack.
The Haiders were playing cards.
They looked up when tho two tele
phone men entered, but Helen In he.r

charge with It. The repair man seut
her outside to push a wire to him.
There, she picked up n transmitter,
attached It, and found sho could listen

Burke was uow calling on the wire.
Helen heard him speak to Musters:
"Ituid box car S. M. 4710 crossing the
Northern ferry today."
At tho moment Masters hung up, the
repair man returned: "That kid of
yours has lust a receiver from my kit,"
ho complained.

"Wasn't he your helper?"
"Helper nothing; be came along to
rny a toll ticket and handed mo tho

"There I" shouted a raider. "That
was my fifty cents you fellows claimed

A loud laugh followed and ulso
soui anxiety. The men ran outside
and located the receiver only to real
ize they had been trapped.

Webb agreed and started the police
for the shuck. Marshall, who had over
heard everything, was delighted. From
Ms concealment ho now watched Hel
en carefully. She flung a bourd across
the rods of the car and climbed In on
the hazardous perch thus contrived, so
sho could be coucculcd and yet stay
with tho car.
With a violent jerk as the slack was
taken up, the train started toward the
ferry slip. This was Marshalls op
portunity. Swinging down under the
cur he stealthily worked his way along
to where Helen, in fancied safety, lay.
She was startled suddenly by the grip
of a heavy band and the next moment
she was lighting frantically to avoid
being thrown by her brutal assullant
from her board and underneath the
wheels.
With the train speeding down the
hill, tho plucky girl fought Marshall's
overwhelming strength. But he was
more than a mutch for two like Helen,
She defended herself with tile strength
of desperation but in vain. Inch by
Inch sho was forced from her trail sup
port. The next instant the car lurched
and with n scream Helen fell between
tho wheels.
Her wit did not desert her and with
an almost convulsive effort sho man
aged to throw herseU! lengthwise with
the rails and. Instantly flattened herself
on the ballast. The hind truck of the
car swept over her nnd truck nfter
truck, following, thundered close nbove
her head. She was choked by dust
and the terrific pounding of the flying
wheels ngulnst the rail Joints deafened
and sickened her, but sho could only
He , perfectly still and pray that ' no
louse rod might lie her destruction. It
seemed as if the end of the train would
never come as If there must be n
huudrcd curs in it. But nt last, with
a roar, the trucks of the cabooso
whirled past and the sunlight flushed
down on the frightened girl.
Half-blinded 'sho scrambled to her
feet and ran after tho train. Thu

It was while they were crossing tho
bay that Helen snw them and called
from where she stood, Webb headed

had happened. If they were to inter
cept tho Haiders they must reach the
train before It was ferried away nnd
they pushed On.
Unfortunately, in spite of all they
could do, tho ferry bout got out Into
the Hlrcura before they could come up
and even ns they approached, they per
ceived the Haiders bringing their own
tug ulongslde tho car ferry. With
hardly an attempt at concenlmcnt, the
gang began ut onco to unload iner
chuudlso from box cur 8. M. 4718.
But Webb's force was now within
striking distance. Urging his launch,
ho run It alongsldo the car ferry and
Helen followed by Webb nnd the po
lice, boarded the transfer und attacked
the Haiders. A pitched battle ensued
a battle with desperate men and
the light, with Helen lu the thick of It,
waged back and forth. Helen was ev
erywhere helping nnd encouraging,
dodging In and out of the mix-up when
ever ehuneo wns afforded to overcome
the thieves. It wus while she was
making one of these sallies that Mus
ters seeing her, resolved to muttc an
end of her for good.
Pursuing her together they caught
Helen, and unseen In the confusion,
picked her up, threw her bodily Into
the open box car, slammed the door
shut and grabbing a crowbar, pinched
a wheel until they started the car for
tho end of the boat.
Too lute. Webb saw the move. Gath
ering headway the box car rolled swift
ly to the length ot the car ferry, and
with n mighty plunge shot Into the
bay Helen, half sluunid from her
tight, still Inside It. And the car be
gun to till with wnter.
