EIGHTH EPISODE
The Knotted Cord.
In the office of tho chief of police,
Helen, with Melrose, Webb and Hoy
Wilson, Impatiently nwnited newa con
cerning touring car No. 52479. Instead
of news, u call eume from the depot
reporting that a patrol officer had been
knocked on the head nnd left sense
less on the nlntform. From the bag
gageman the chief got a description of
tho officer's assailants nnd what was

No. 9 to Pedro.
"Lady Melrose may be In that
trunk," cxclultned Helen, listening ea
gerly. Molroso snorted Incredulously: "Im

She turned quickly to her companions:

Pedro. Cornel"
Webb started for the door. Wilson
nnd Helen wore close behind and Mel
rose, half-duzed at the .suddenness of
the move, followed. They tumbled Into
n police cor, and with a sergeant- at i
the wheel started nt emergency speed

lifted her gently out, and then, to the

she herself would take the place of the
uncousclous woman directing him
how to closo the trunk and leave It to
be claimed.

chine, by speeding furiously, had al

and Masters claimed their trunk, and

shook his hend. "I'm ufruld that boy
won't stand for any crookedness," ho
muttered.
"He'll hove to go east, anyway," ob
served Desmond. "So he won't bother
us."
Burke now told Desmond of Mar
shall und Masters' latest exploit But,
deeply Interested in Helen herself,
Desmond wus enraged at her abduc
tion. Burke, taken completely aback,
, .listened In humiliation to his outburst
. of wrath. "I won't have women mixed
up in this work," declared the 'angry
Easterner. '

tersely. "Remember that, or you go to

robbed on the ferry.

and C'hnpman. more furious than ever,
exploded again with wrath. Desmond
finally set him roughly down in a chair
and turned to Burke, but the moment
he took his hands off Chapman the lat
ter bounding to his feet, took the war
path again. Thinking by this time the
sceno had gone far enough, Desmond,
to placate the angry man, handed him
n cigar. Chapman dashed It to tho
floor. Desmond took him by the shoul
ders. "See here," he exclaimed sharp
ly. "Listen 1"
"I won't listen," yelled the Indignant
man.
Again Desmond was forced to push
htm Into a chair. "Keep quiet long
enough to allow mo to appoint n mnn
to Investigate your charge," he shout
ed. This somewhat subdued Chap
man's choler. But Desmond, already
upset, and forgetting thnt Hoy was now
his own superior, colled In the latter
und asked him to go. with Chapman to
Pedro to investigate the case. Hoy
mode no objection whatever. Indeed,
he welcomed the opportunity nnd his
frank, honest face made n happy Im
pression on Chapman. The two men
left talking most nmlnbly together.
Too late Desmond realized his blun
der. Ho turned to Burke. "Get word
