Mccormick ll-7-lt-pd. A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO OUR BOYS. To the boys in France: We wish you a Merry Christ mas and a Happy New Year. This is written on the 7th day of November, but it must be mailed soon so as to reach you by Christmas Day. So in order to be sure, it is writ ten today. The first thing that we all want you to know is .that we miss you and are proud of you. In our mind's eye we scc you growing and developing every day into more manly young men, into soldiers worthy of Uncle Sam. Sonic of the older of us, like Walt Mason, rather envy you your experiences, the leaving of routine work at home, the' traveling across the continent, the em bail ing for France, the thrills of the unseen menace of the sub marine, the arrival in France, the meeting of your com rades in arms of many nations, the excitement, the hurry, the confusion. To some of us, sights and scenes that you have gone through now that you arc safe in France would have been like elixir of life; it would have toned up our nervous systems, given weary brains a brief surcease. So when we think of you far away it is with sonic envy that you boys have been privileged to take up Uncle Sam's work. . You boys have volunteered to do it; that was fine and manly and we folks at home appreciate your devotion. We think of you and talk of you. On Christinas Pay make merry; be full of laughter and joy. Think of the folks at home; we are going to make merry, too. We have all sent 3rou some little trinkets, some home-made things, to show you that our hearts arc in the right place. So when you have your Christmas turkey and are gathered around the festal board, drink a toast to dear old La Grande and Un ion and Wallowa Counties, and we will do the same; drink a toast to our dear boys at the front, whether it be on laud or sea. Attention Lady Maccabees. The funeral of Sister Katie Coal well will be held at the M. E. church at Imbler tomorrow at 10 o'clock Interment will be in the Summerville cemetery. All who possibly can are urged to attend. The Honor Guard will not meet for the Red Cross but every member is urged to be present Thursday to hear the last lecture of Dr. Underwood. Tho Knights of Columbus will hold thdr regular monthly meeting to night. After a business meeting re freshments will be served. Presbyterian Missionary Society. The Presbyterian Missionary Socie ty will meet with Mrs. A. T. Hill on Fourth Street on Thursday afternoon at 2:110, instead of Friday afternoon. I Dr. Maud Allen of India will be pres ent and speak. All ladies of the con gregation are urged to be present. Ladies don't miss this treat of meet ing and hearing Dr. Allen. The Presbyterian Missionary Society of Union will be guests of tho La Grande Society on that day. The C. E. So ciety will give a Rally for Dr. Allen on Thursday evening at the church to which every one is invited. ll-G-2t.
