A de fective flue in the residence of Judd Gear caused a flurry of excitement last Thursday. The fire from the chimney caught on the roof but was soon put out before any material dam age was done. The Rev. C. C. Pratt will occupy the pulpit In Noh Powder the first Sunday in each month. Mr. and Mrs. John Phillips and fam ily are selling out and will move to Oregon City this week. The Ladies' Aid Society will meet with Mrs. George McDannel Wednes day afternoon. The Red Cross will soon make an other shipment of knitted garments and request that all those who have not completed their work will do so as quickly as possible and send sumo to Mrs. McCall. . A new shipment of yarn has been received by the Red Cross -and knit ters can secure same by calling for it at Mrs. McCall's. The Church of the Ascension will hold their services hereafter in the Methodist Church the first Sunday in each month. Rev. Charles H. Powell, pastor and general missionary. RevKA. H. Pengra, of Eugene, Or., arrived in Cove Saturday. He will remain here over two Sundays preaching in the Baptist Church and if all things are satisfactory will re main here permanently as pastor of the Baptist Church. Mrs. Cora Richards and two sons are moving into the vncant house on the iranch recently purchased by her son-in-lnw, Nip. Conley. Dr. H. H. Little returned last week from Fairfield, Idaho, where he has been transacting business for the past three months and through various trades has secured a 400-acre iranch. L. M. Laird, of Fairfield, Idaho, has purchased the Mattice ranch from II. H. Little and with his family take possession this week. A new woodshed is being built on the back of the Cove State Bank. The farmers are taking advantage of this beautiful weather and getting their plowing done and Winter wheat in which bids fair for a big crop next year. About fifty young people from the Methodist church in Island City mo tored over to Cove Methodist church Sunday evening and united in an fcpworth League service. IIILGARD NOTES IIILGARD, Ore., Nov. 5. (Special.) Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Scott were visitors in La Grande Saturday. N. K. West loaded and sent out a car of wood. Mrs. Fredericks went to La Grande Saturday. D. W. 'Sanford has a pig that ab solutely refuses to respect a pen. His last getaway landed the porker in Meacham to where he had followed some campers. Wheat is growing and looking fine since the recent showers. W. V. Conner went to La Grande Saturday. Several Hilgarders went down Monday to see and hear Thomas R. Marshall. Mrs. Divens went to La Grande Thursday and brought her daughter, Irma, back to Hilgard with her. A very pleasant Hallowe'en socinl was enjoyed at the school house Wed nesday evening. The pupils had pre pared a short but interesting pro gram. The room was decorated with cats, lanterns and orange and black streamers. After the program a so cial time was enjoyed. School girls served a lunch consisting of pie, cake, Banuwichcs and coffee.
