Grande at 6:16 p. m. Sunday., .
The tvere. certainly "Skookum"
bunch f boys, and orie of the Jollicst
and bast) behaved detatchments that
have gone through our city. A
quad formed up on the platform and
headed by two' Standard bearers
marched around the depot. . v
At Huntington and Baker the whole
detachment marched through the
town. The boys were cheerful and
jolly notwithstanding the fact that
thoy had been 48 hours on the train.
The two sections wers composed of I

of Mr. Cole of the Pullman Co. of Sun
Wnnrincn who took charffe at Sr.ll
Lake and will go through to Camp I
throw his baggage off and yell good
by boys as the train moved out of the

Utah's request to La Grande girls
was handed out in the shape of a note
written on tho back of a lunch box
and follows:
"Dear Girls of La Grande:-
' "We are on the way to France to
fight for you and to get old Kaiser

while we are away. Don't marry any
slackers or cripples while we are

"SPINDLE OF LIFE" MAKES HIT.
The Butterfly picture, "The Spin
dle of Life" that was shown at the
Star Theatre last evening caused a
good deal of comment. The picture
more than pleased the large crowd
that was present to see it.
Ben Wilson, who plays the lead in
the picture is one of the most popu
lar stars before the camera and has

each week, the more of the story that
is unfolded the better it is getting.
Lonesome Luke, that long thin laugh
maker, will bo in a comedy. The
name Luke and comedy means all the
same thing and it is hardly worth
while to say more. This week's con
vulsion is called "Stop, Luke and Lis
ten." The big treat is the appearance
of Harrv Carey in another of his fa
mous Western plays. This fellow
seems to delight in rough houses of
any kind and n lot of shooting and
horseback riding. He is given ample
opportunity to show off his best work
in "The Wrong Man," the name of the
picture that will bo shown at the Star
Tuesday and Wednesday.
ARMED MEN ATTACK SOLDIERS.
GREAT MYSTERY SOLVED
Delightful, piquant Billie Burke, in
er latest Paramount picture, "The
Mysterious Miss Terry," is as whim
sically charming as ever and from
the very first scene that flashes
across the screen, the picture holds
the breathless attention and interest
of the spectator.
"The Mysterious Miss Terry" is an
adaptation of a story by Gelett Bur
gess, the well-known author and hu
morist, and marks his entrance into
the field of photoplay writing.
It will be at the Arcade today and
tomorrow.
Billie Burke, as Mavis Terry, clev
erly demonstrates a novel method of
finding both happiness and a hus
band. The latter she does by a pro
cess of slimination, that is, she goes
incognito to a nearby boarding hon3e
where ihe takes up the life of an or
dinary -working girl although she ia
io reality an heiress. Here she meets
three young men who promptly fall
in love with her.
E;h of them is poor and strug
gling for a living, although iar super
ior to the types of idle young men she
has known in hkr former sphere.
Finding out the secret ambitions of
each she is able to gratify them and
thus discover which is really worth
while and in earnest . ' '

determined young heroine involves
herself in many thrilling and humor
ous situations such as a narrow es
cape from being arrested for robbing
her own house, and later for giving
away some of her own gorgeous
gowns. Humorous episode and thrill
ing adventure follow in rapid succes

til a fascinating and unexpected de
nouement takes place which clears
the atmosphere and gives just the
right "happy ending." The production

12.000 COAL MINERS WILL
BE ON STRIKE TONIGHT
(United Press.)
PITTSBURG, Runs., Nov. 3.
Twelve thousand coal miners will be
striking by tonight, union officials de
clared today . Approximately eight
thousand minors are striking now. The
strike is spreading rapidly.
Merry Christmas for Soldiers.
CAMP LEWIS, Tacoma, Nov. 3.
A Merry Christmas it will be for the
45.000 men in training here.
To be more correct, two merry
Christniases it will ba.
The Tacoma Commercial club will
bo Santa Clnus for the drafted men.
Under present incomplete plans, two
celebrations will bs held on separate
nights. One affair will be staged at
the Tacoma Stadium and the othor nt
the camp. At both there will be giant
Christmas trees, bedecked in true
Christmas style.

Twenty-five armed men, believed to
be I. W. W. attacked a Western Pa
cific troop train tmlny. The soidiers
used clubs and beat off the attackers.
