call this season.
Chief of Police reports 6 arrests
for the' week.S three' of them for
gambling, two traffic violations, and
ore for cigarette smoking. Fines

Number of lights reported out, three.
Street and water superintendent re
ports an expenditure for the two de
partments of $145.00, $76.50 charged
to the street and $68.50 to the water
department. Falling leaves increase
the expense of cleaning streets some
what and a Bevere leak in the fire
hydrant at the comer of Elm and
Adams took up some of 'the cost in
the water department. Other ex
penses were current expenses.

Weathor permitting will send crew
over the telephone line to repair same
tomorrow. Caretaker Woods reports
having finished bridge across Beaver,
near the caretaker's house, main
stringers for same having rotted off.
Contractor Phillips has about one
more day's work before completing
fill at subway. Railroad company
has about completed viaduct and will
ask for final inspection the latter part
of the week.
As per instructions of commission
I have seen Mr. Miller, who agrees
to furnish fair grounds for any future
comoany f soldiers which may be
sent to La Grande, at the rate of
$30.00 per month. This .agreement
subject to sale of grounds or such
other arrangement which lie might
make which would place same out of
his hands. Have no official mtlma
tion of other troops being sent here.

Camp Lewis Notes
kOct. 27. The order has been given
Oct. 26. The order has been given
and preparations already are under
way for the greatest Thanksgiving
dinner in the Pacific northwest.
Something like 40,000 will partake
of this great feast and turkey and
cranberry sauce and pie will be on
the menu.
And, more than that, every lucky
man at this feast can eat to his fill.
8econd helpings will cheer the home
sick and braceup the lonesome.
The quartermaster's department is
preparing for the feast now although
Thanksgiving day is about a month
distant.
The camp baking department is
running 24 hours a day. Twelve tons
and a half of bread are bnked at a
time in the great row of ovens.
Twelve Tacoma telephone operators
stationed nt Camp Lewis find army
life unromntic although 45,000 soldiers
are scattered around over the land
scape. Men not even a reporter
are not allowed near them and the
girls can entertain callers only under
the watchful eye of a chnperone.
"They're guarded like girls in a
convent," explnined one officer.

The Indiana Supreme Court held today
the woman suffrage law unconstitutional.
