The President's Proclamation
Of A Day Of Prayer
To the editor of the Observer: You
have most commendnbly promoted en
ergetieally, the volunteer, Liberty
Loan, Red Cross and Food Conserva
tion campaigns, which have to do with
the material preparation, for waging
successfully and expeditiously, thiB
present war. Will you not do as
much for the spiritual?
This coming Sunday has been set
apart by the President, at the request
of Congress, as "a day upon which
our people should be culled upon to
offer concerted prayer to Almighty
God for His divine aid in the success
of our arms."
. . It is a matter for sincere thank
fulness, that amidst the stress of
raising and providing the sinews of
war, the fact has neither been for
gotten, nor overlooked, that there is a
spiritual power to be reckoned with
and enlisted, without whose" aid, the
most colossal preparations will prove
unavailing.
Our President's two greatest pre
decessors both recognized and ac
knowledged this truth, and both
agonized in prayer for the support of
that Power. But some will cavil and
t sceptically question the good of such
action. The great Christian poet has
given us a reason therefor, which
commends itself to reverent minds:
"More things are wrought by prayer
Than this world dreams of;
For so the whole round earth is every
way,
Bound by gold chains about the feet
of God.'
V And St James tells us that," the
supplication of a righteous man avail
eth much in its working."
Prayer is thus described as a force
with powerful effect. A force fore
seen and accounted for in the creation
of the universe. Like electricity it
has its circuit, connecting God and
ourselves. And like this elemental
force, knowledge is required to use it
aright and bring out its effectiveness.
Electricity while existing from crea
tion, was not of much avail to man,
until Franklin caught it, and Morse,
Bell, Edison and Marconi harnessed
and broke it in to service.
So with prayer, we must learn how
to use it, and make it effective, and it
is due to our ignorance that its use
fulness and power are not more mark
edly manifested. But still there are
instances and evidences enough, to
show that it has power with God and
does prevail. Jewish history and
other history as well, afford numer
ous examples of the effect of prayer
in national affairs. So the proclama
tion of the President calls for our
serious consideration; both as a relig
ious and patriotic duty.
It is well to recall, that both Sir
John Jellicoe, first nnval lord of the
admirality, and Sir Duvid Beatty, ad
miral in chief of the British navy, are
both praying men, and not ashamed
to make the fact known. Almost the
last public statement of the late Lord
Roberts, was to the effect that the
war would not be successfully brought
to a conclusion until "England was on
its knees." And our own gallant Gen
eral Pershing, sends this message to
our troops: "Hardship will be your
lot, but trust in God will give you
comfort; temptation will befall you,
but the teachings of our Savior will
give you strength."
In "Mr. Britling Sees it Through,"
we see a picture of our own religious
indifference and blindness. Will it
require for u, as for him, the sacri
fice of our sons and orothers to show
us God? Sunday will tell, by our
fesponse to the President's request.
What a profound cause for shame ana
condemnation will it be, if after mag
nificent response to all other demands
we fail miserably in this. What a
! branding of ourselves as a nation of
: materialists!

The concrete foundation for a poul
try house can be made at least eight
or ten Inches above the ground and It
should then be filled with nt lenst
three Inches of tightly pneked cinders
or coarse gravel. Over this place the
joncrete mixture 111 the proportions of
one part of cement to six parts of
?ravel and spread it out with a plas
terer's trowel to a depth of two Inches.
The mixture will spread better If
plenty of water Is added during the
mixing and It Is quite sloppy. Before
the first cement mixture hus set cover
the surface with a half-Inch layer of
a mixture containing one part cement
to three parts of coarse sand Instead
of gravel. A foundation of this height
allows the sill to be above the floor
and this prevents rottihg. It Is also
best to tile the ground under the
poultry house unless It Is very well
drained and when on a well drained
site tiling will take away the moisture
that lies Just under the surface of the
noil as well ns the surface water and
