GOVERNMENT DREDGE
DOCKED FOR WINTER
(United Press.)
LINNTON, Ore., Oct. 23. The gov
ernment dredge Chinook Is docked
here for the winter after a summer's
work at the mouth of the Columbia.
The Chinook has made a harbor en
trance 41 to 45 feet deep in a 1300
foot channel, which is 2000 feet wide.
RAISING MONEY TO
BUY SOLDIERS BIBLES
TACOMA, Wash., Oct. 23. Money
is being raised here today to buy
Bibles for soldiers at Camp Lewis.
The American Bible society's appro
priation for the camp will buy Bibles
for all but 8000 of the men. Local
pastors are aiding in making up this
deficit.

WALLOWA, Oct. 21. (Special.)
Mr. McElroy, a man who has been
around town, has a baby who fell
from a couch and injured its spine
so that its eyes were fixed. It was
taken to Dr. Roberts and when tho
j spot was touched on its back it cried.
It is not known what the doctor will
do.
Mrs. Couch who has been suffer
ing from a general breakdown for
several weeks is some better and it is
expected that she will be up and
around soon though she will not be
able to do any housework.
No manual training teacher could
be procured at the last attempt as
they are all working in the shipyards
and the Wallowa High school has de
cided that a carpenter will be gotten.
A meeting was held in the High
school gymnasium Wednesday even
ing to boost Liberty Bonds, speeches
jvere made by Mr. Phil Metscham and
Mr. C. K. Cochran or rortlana and
Ir. C. T. McDaniel, chairman of
Wallowa. ,
The drive for placing every house
wife under the new food conservation
idea will probably be taken in hand
by the high school students within a
few days.
$7,000,000 TUNNEL FOR
COLORADO RAILROAD.

DENVER, Oct. 23. Construction of
'a $7,000,000 tunnel under James P.?ak
a dream of years of railroad con
struction engineers probably will be
realized in the near future, if plans to
secure investment of $5,000,000 of
eastern capital, negotiations for which
are now under way in New York, nre
consumated.
The tunnel will shorten by 200 miles
(the present route of the Denver &
Salt Lnke Railroad the "Mount
road." Two millions of capital toward
tho $7,000,000 required to construct
the tunnel, rehabilitate the road ind
remove the receivership under which
it is now toeing operated and place it
on a paying basis, is assured by Colo
rado bondholders, provided the re
quired additional $5,000,000 is secur

Many strange human documents in!
the form of wills and last testaments '
are made in the trenches. Before,
going into battle Tommy sometimes!
scrawls a few words on a scrap of
paper disposing of his chattels in case
he gets "gone up."
Almost anything that indicates the
will of the dead man is accepted as a
legal will and the War Office deciph
ers them as best they can and puts
Jhem into effect. A Northcountry-
man left the following:
"Whoever first sets eyes on this
gets everything I leave, for my kith
and kin are dead and gone, and I've
not a friend to grieve. There's a tidy
bit in the bank, you 11 find, and my
army pay though small. So, stranger
breath one sigh for me and you're
welcome to it all."
Curiously the young sergeant who
found the body and first "set eyes
on" the will was awarded the prop
erty and found a tidy sum in the
bank.
Some of the wills are found to be
fictions. The Tommy enjoys willing
to his friends vast estates, automo
biles and yachts that he doesn't pos
sess nnd causing the. War Office a
lot of trouble.
