INDUSTRY THRIVING
Spokane, Wash., Oct. 19. (Special.)
The growing importance of the pea
industry is illustrated at Fairfield,
Wash., where eastern seed concerns
operating in the vicinity have already
contracted for 25,000 acres of peas
for next year.
The yield this year has averaged
15 to 20 bushels, about half of a ntr
mal yield. Even at the smaller fig
uics.'mny growers say they can make
a greater profit than in wheat rising.

While at Clackamas we were all
impatient to be on our way, so when
the word finally came, we all wore a
happy crowd.
Our first stop was at Gazelle, Cal.,
where we stopped to water and filed
our, stock, in fact while the horses
were some trouble to us they also
were a means for us to visit most of
the principal cities on the way.
We were treated fine by evory one,
and at Los Angeles, Tucson, Hous
ton and New Orleans, most of the
boys hired cars and went for drives
and to see the various places of interest.
At El Paso the Red Cross ladies
met us at the train and had a fine
lunch ready for us.
We were twelve days and nights on
per. To cheer up your soldier friend,
send him a copy of this paper.

two revolvers, a rifle and a bomb and
with a knife between his teeth should
attack Jesse Cover, Dunkard, he would

Tons of candy, cake and fruit are
consumed in Camp Lewis every week.
An average of about 56,000 pieces of
mail is now handled daily. Boxes of

at Charlotte were as glad to be at the
end of our journey, as we were to
leave Oregon.
The South, as a rule, is a very beau
tiful country, with much more timber
and hills than we expected.
At the present tune there aro about
30,000 men at Camp Greene, but new
companies are coming in evory day.
Almost all of these troops are from
the Northwest, and they are quite a
contrast to the home people here,
who as a rule, are not near as healthy
or robust looking set of men.
We are now drilling hard and ex
pect before long to be in shape to do
some good for Uncle Sam.
The boys are not used to being con
fined like they keep us; but do not
mind tne discipline liKe we tnougnt. we
would before joining.
Charlotte is a very pretty place of
60,000 and they do not need Billy Sun
day to lecture them, for they already
have 68 white and 31 black churches,
so you may be sure we are very well
taken care of spiritually, and Uncle
Sam is trying to mentaly and phys
ically. We do not expect to spend the Win
ter here, but have no idea whether it
will be at some other camp or r ranee.

as a genuine heart breaking coquette

drawing room divan. As a fighter
Miss Owen shows that she can noi'i
her own with the best of them. In
thrilling scene, in which sue is
seized by the foreman of the much,
she makes her escape by "strong
n" methods from her assailant and
gallops madly away on horseback. In

her nursuers Miss Owen makes her
mount swim across a lake.
She goaded the animul into the shal
low water and expected him to swim
the rest of the way. As the deeper
water was reaohed the steed sank into
the mud until he was unable to extri
cate himself and floundered helpless
ly. No one but Miss Owen realized
the predicament she was in, but sne ,
resolved not to let the accident spoil
the scene and struck out to swim to
the other side of the lake without the
horse. The camera man had the pres
ence of mind to keep the camera fo
