HAMILTON , (United Press Staff Correspondent) New York, Sept. . 12 The ;iiex lActed fervor with wheh ' western athletics entered into the A. A. U. : games at St. Louis recently, tne ' 1 I! J J nV,.ii,arl Cllllfl tennis plnyed -by westerners at Forest Hill, a nd the fact that western col leges have led the way in keeping football in the curriculum of sports declares more strongly than anytning cl.e could that the west has turned from the east for its athletic guide imd is going it alone. A few years back eports activities practically centered in the east. The big football games, the big track meets, even the world's series were pulled off on the Atl.-.ntic seaboard. There was a strong attempt early in the summer to discredit the obst acles under which St. Louis was labor ing in order to stage the annual A.A. U. games and there was a concerted effort to remove the games from .Missouri metropolis back to the east. It failed when the- St. Louis sports i lovers-went into the fight with both feet and held 'the games. The spirit was a commenaaDie ining j,ut tne fact nat s0 mnny athletics most of them westerners, by the way attended was a most encouraging thing to the west. There are so many persons living in the east that the west gets little consideration in most things. The big games in this section are able to draw from a vectly larger population, and consequently more profitable. It now appears that Chicago will get the American league and of this year's world's series, thus adding an other sports feature to a 'brilliant year for tho west. The biggest kind of football is going to be almost ex- ADVERTISE. COLUMNS. IF IT'S A clusively centered in the west this j year. When the war is over and sports begin to take cheir regular turn with everything else, the west is going to have something more to say than has been granted in recent past years. The librarian has been revising the registration file, and has thrown out the cards of all persons who have not borrowed, a book since Dec. 31, 1915, or who are known to have moved away. This leaves 2348 persons in good standng as to library cards. It is interesting to note that the first hundred registered in 1912 have allowed the fewest lapses in their use of the library. The public library is a tax-supported institution, free to all the citizens of La Grande. Children are required to obtain the signature of parent or guardian on their applications. P. today so will write between times. All of the boys are doing work of scmo kind today until we get camp straightened up. Last night we all slept pretty cold and I guess will un til we get used to this climate. Last night some of us were down to the Y. M. C. A. and tho fellows from the East and South liked to have talked an arm off of us. Tho Alabama troop are all fine fellows, but they are some fighters. They had a big fight just before we came hero - with a Co. from New York. I think they all think we are wild but we are a long ways from any of them, so will keep to ourselves. There were 16 hospital men just came in from Delaware and either go in our Co. or some other Field Hosptal, but are with us at the present. We may all tret a 24 or 36 hr. pass to see Now York but do not know yet for sure. I guess if we stay hero long we will have to get used to some Eastern ways, but the eastern soldiers don't seem to be Butter Labels for sJjlc at The Observer Office. OSTEOPATHIC PHYSICIAN DR. J. L. They look kind of dirty and sloppy. All of our Co. are figuring on getting leather leggings soon, for the Hospitals are allowed to wear them if they want to. One ambulance corps right behind us have 3 motor cycles with side cars and 2 or 3 tour ing cars. They are all Harloy mach ines. I guess we will get ours soon and supposo our Major will get a touring car. All the fellows set,'1) to be awful sociable, and tho southern boys sure are mannerly. Don't know if it is curiousity or what, but they treat us fine, although I guess we do scorn just : as odd io them as they are to us. I think there are supposed . to be eoldicrs hero from ovory state when they all arrive, so you see there will be lots of different people here. But ell of uo will take Oregon for ours. They say wo all have got to take mother examination beforo wo ever go across, and it is very strict. They say they don't take anyone unless they are perfect. So maybe that is why they were examined for teeth and nose etc. at Clackamas. I am I going to let my teeth go anyway now. j I sure do hope we will get to go to Y, tomorrow until Monday a. m. for all of. us want to go. The other Cos., on arriving hero 'all got a 3G hr. pass to see N. Y. and maybe we will. We have a dandy place to take baths here each Co. has sepurate showers. , Well, I am back from the kitchen again and will write some more. We had to get those felows that just came here some coffee. They seem to be a nice bunch of fellows, and have been stationed in some Hospital in Delaware. All the rest of the Hos pital Corps have those canvas cots. Everyone says' that those southern troops will not be Mo to stand it here very long, on account-of the difference in climate. The aeroplanes have been flying over us ever since we got up.
