HAMILTON (United Press Staff Correspondent) New York, Aug.' 31. A failure by the White Sox to win this year's American league championship would constitute' not only the most famous' reversal of form in the history of the great pastime, but wjuld .be the means of robbing baseball of the grandest chance it ever had to simply wallow in glory. It is a foregone conclusion that the Giants will trot under the National league wire first. Hence, a White Sox victory would bring representa tives of the nation's two largest cities together in a grapple for tho world's title. The commercial and civic riv alry that already exists between thesu two cities would inject 'interest in such a series that could be brought about in no other way. Such a world's series would bo reminiscent of the old Cubs-Giants days when the players used to fight 'SPECIAL. HAMILTON (United Press Staff Correspondent) New York, Aug. 31 Thirty-three ! years old and just beginning to have 'his most remarkable success as a I pitcher that's the record of Eddie Ci cotte. j Credited this year with the, most I successful use of the "shine ball", he also is given credit for having some control over a knuckle ball and is more than the average performer with the spitter. Cicotte, a veteran who, according to usual records, should be getting out of the way, heaved himself into the rec ords for keeps when he hurled a no hit, no-run game this year. When Jack Coomb3 was getting his first experience as a major-leaguer, Cicotte had been, taken on by Detroit, found wanting and sent back. He graduated from the same club that turned loose of Ty Cobb and they both went to Detroit the same year. Snce the beginning of the 1908 sea son Cicotte has been twirling them over in the American league first as .a member of the Red Sox and then as a member of the White Sox. Cicotte missed participation in the 1912 world's series by a hair, for he was transferred to the Chicago club in that year, after ho had been turned down and spurned by Jake Stahl as no good. Cicotte has been going along in an even way, winning a game here and losing one there. His most success ful season was while he was with Lin coln in tho western league in 1907. He won twenty-three and lost ten games. If the White Sox finally do club their way into the American league pennant it will be largely the fault of this veteran heaver. His work is the most consistent, and the really brilliant among all the curvers of the great baseball club.
