Naomi Williamson went to Eugene last night for a few days to gather up her helongings preparatory to teaching school here this winter. Little Lois Nelson, six-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Nel son, went to Vale, Oregon, this noon to visit with her uncle and aunt, irfr. and Mrs. George Huntington Currey. Second Street Viaduct Ready Soon The viaduct at Second Street will be ready for traffic in about two weeks, is the off icial information received from those in charge. . Returns From : Visit Mrs. Frank Smith, wife of Mayor Smith of Elgin, returned home this j morning from a month's visit with her mother, Mrs. Calvert, in Kansas City. Mrs. Cal vert accompanied Mrs. Smith home. Miss Hortense Smith, who is in train ing at the Baker hospital, joined hor motner and grandmother and will visit at her home in Elgin for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Hodein Rtum hi. trict Attorney and Mrs. John S. Hod gin returned today after a trip in the British Columbia and Puiret Sound country. Mr. Hodgin reports that there is a great deal of smoke-in the Columbia- river region, but not much on Puget Sound. . 1 ' ' .' Honor Guard Meets At the regular Honor Guard meeting last night, plans were discussed as to the exhibits of the order for the Oregon State Fair at Sa)em, in October. The girls wijl take up new headquarters at the Y. M. C. A. huilding, next week, and expect to do more thanever then. .'' Archbishop Christie at Hot Lake Archbishop Christie, of the Oregon Diocese, with headquarters in Port land, is at Hot Lake, enjoying a few days of mulch needed rest. - He is ac companied by his secretary, Father De Lormier; and Father Cronin, chaplain, also George C. Hennessy manager of the chapel car St. Peter, in which palatial car the party is traveling. They have been to Boise where they attended the funeral of the late Bishop Glpriux. Home Guard Meeting A large ma jority of the members of the Home Guard responded Jo the specially called meeting last night, and the mat ter of fire fighting was taken up. It was decided that if the soldiers who went up this morning to fight fires, Lcould not get the fire under control, or would have to be thero for more than a day or two, that the whole battalion, or as many as possibly can, will go up either to help or to relieve the company L men. E. Lentz, a railroad engineer, who had been fighting fires at the head pf Ladd Creek. Mr. Lentz was patrolling one of the trenches made to prevent the fire from spreading I farther, when a tamarack spike burned off and foil to the ground. Mr. Lentz tried to dodge it by getting behind a tree, but it caught his left leg and badly bruised it. A Y. M. C. A. first aid package came in very handy. He was earned out of the deep c.inyon on an improvised stretcher and then rede about four miles on horseback to where a ma chine could bo had, and was brought in to La Grande by Mr. Williamson. Ho was taken to th? hospital this moming where ho now is, and ho is getting along nicely. Mr. Williamson reports the fires at the head of Ladd Creek under control, oHliougl about 600 .cro.i of very heavy timber have benr burned over. .
