Crouter, of Union, a native Baker boy, was suc cessful in passing the recent examin ation for the officers' training camp and left this week for the Presidio, San Francisco. He was one of the successful 131 over a 1000 Oregon ap plicants. '' .r ' t ! . Four Elgin Boys Enlist Recruiting Officer Peter Swartz of the U. S. Navy has returned from Elgin where he signed up four (recruits. They wore Robert George Blumenstein, son of the postmaster and brother of a previous recruit Irvin Henry Sion of Summer- ville, Raymond Ellis Young and Oliver Pleasant Young, brothers. The first two went as apprentice seamen and the latter two as second class firemen. Lou E. Menham Married 'Word has been received of the marriage of Lou E. Menham, formerly of this place but now of Pullman, Washingtonn, to Miss Stella M Brown, also of Pull man. The wedding occured at Edison, Wash., on Tuesday, August 21, the ceremony occurring at the house of the bride's aunt, Mrs. Frank Mid dlestale, where she, her mother and two brothers were visiting. Mr. Menham was practically raised at this place,' having come here with his patents uv 1889. He learned the printer's trade at the. Observer office under the Currey Bros, the . former proprietou s. In . 1904 he; went to Pendleton to accept a position with the East Oregonian, after a year there he acted as traveling staff correspond cnt, covering Umatilla, Walla Walla and Columbia counties. In 1906 he returned to La .Grande to accept a position on .the Observer as combined business manager and city editor after eight months he . went to Pullman to purchase the Tribune, which with his brother, W. L. Menham, he has since conducted. .The bride is a graduate of .the business department of the .State Col lego of Washington, with the class of 1916. She entered the auditor's office of that institution upon graduation, and at the Juno meeting of the board of regents wsis conferred with the title of cashier. She. is a most ac complished and capable young lady and enjoys the respect of many friands in the state of Washington. Mir. and Mrs. Menkim visited Seattle, Olympia and Portland. They will make their home at Pullman. Returns to Elgin Mrs. Geo. Chand- 'Br returned to her home in Elgin this muniing irora a inree weens visit hi Portland and California.
