U, is composed of over 550 progressive stores with a buying power of over 50 million annually. t SCHOOL CHILDREN ARE HELPING SOLVE il8 FOOD PROBLEM (By George Martin, United Press Stai'f Correspondent) Washington, Aug. 20,-r-JUncle Sam Has just recruited and trained an army of 800,000 American boys and girls, who will be on dutv at state and county fa ys every when; this fall. ! ' ''.: : Tlieir work now consists of helping their fathers and mothers preserve, pickle, dry and can the enormous sur plus of America's war gardens. Their!work at the fairs will consist of practical demonstrationvbf metnods. It is estimated that this juvenile army will exhibit its prowess and products to about 20,000,000 Americans. They will be the principal attraction, at the series of Food Training camps the department of agriculture is or ganizing for every section of the country for late August, September and October. The boys and girls in this great food drive are the mem bers of the thousands of Boys 'and Girls' clubs organized by and working under the direction of the United States department of agriculture. . The national headquarters is at Washington with a spe cialist of the juvenile extension department in charge. Each day at the Food Training camps the children will can and dry food products, in different ways, giving the public a correct Mea as to how it should be done. The particular boys and girls who will demonstrate for the state colleges of agriculture and for the government, are now being choseri through a series of competitive tests in practically every community in the country. These contests are being held in the schools, at community fairs and picnics, and at other public gatherings. Only the wiu ners in the larger local contests, who have shown by their work that they arc capable of discharging the tasks the government will give them, will be permitted to demon strate at the Food Training Camps. In addition to this the girls will conduct exhibits and demonstrations on borne baking, cooking, methods of ar ranging the canned and preserved foods into balanced menus for the family, efficient home management, and garment -making. The boys in addition to their work in the field of can ning and drying, will conduct exhibits on poultry hus bandry, and the raising of farm crops, and demonstrations with farm animals swh as calves, pigs, sheep and horses. 000,000 to France and one for $100,000,000 to 'Itaty. Numerous other smaller checks ranging from $1,000,000 to $75,000,000 have been signed as loans to our allies. Previous to January, 1917, the largest check that had ever been sighed by a Secretary of the Treasury of the United States was one for $40,000,000 in payment for the rights of the French Panama Canal company for the privi lege of constructing the Panama Canal. The next largest check was for $25,000,000 in payment for the Danish West Indies. When the treaty ceding the islands to the United States was signed it contained a clause calling for pay ment of the entire amount in gold. When it came time for the Danish minister to collect'for the islands, the Treasury was ready to make the payment in gold, but the perplexed minister found that there were hardly enough wagons in Washington to haul $25,000,000 in gold, and finally, after much cabling between officials, he consented to take a draft for the amount, to be placed at the credit of his government.. . " ..r.'.l EDITORIAL COMMENT. The Majority Rule. When it comes to the call of the government to act and arm, the response is as prompt as in an autocratic country. If there is delay.it is because our politicians quarrel and talk, not because there is any lack of spirit of unity on the part of the people. The principle of acceptance of ma jority rule has become ingrained into our national fiber as the result of generations of successful democratic gov ernment. It is a great safeguard. Evening Tribune, Pendleton. M'ADOO'S SIGNATURE ON CHECK, WORLD'S LARGEST (By United Press) Washington, Aug. 20. The largest check ever issued in the world has been returned to the United States Treas ury, paid and cancelled. The check for two hundred mil lion dollars was signed by Secretary of the Treasury Will iam G. McAdoo, and represented the first payment on, the loan of the United States to Great Britain. Other large checks which have been signed by Secre tary McAdoo within the last six months are one for $100,- ALFALFA HAY Ninety per cent of the hay in Walla Walla County, in all probability, has been sold to cattle and sheep men, leaving a very small percentage to be shipped out. I am extra fortunate in having about two thousand tonB of strictly number one leafy alfalfa hay to dispose of. I can sell the same within ten days to be shipped away, but much prefer to see the sheep and cattle carried through until spring, as I realize that there will be a big stock loss the coming fall and winter unless properly fed. I can furnish feed ground for the most of this hay. You can ship your stock to Portland via the O.-W. R. & N. on a 'feed in transit" rate, and stop and feed my hay with no extra charge.
