Do you know a potato bug when grou see mml JNot a lady bug but a potato bug. Moat everyone ia ac quainted with our ordinary lady bug and it is often mistaken for the 4olorado potato beetle by those that have not aeon this bisect. Union County has hud some potato bugs for several years and we have been trying to hold them in check and if possible exterminate them. We lust, realize that if this peat becomes very general we also will have to apray our entire potato fields each year and thus add considerable to the expense of producing a crop, and bo each year that this insect can be held in check means much to the po tato growers of the county. So far wo have found them only in the El gin and Imbler sections and I have been helping the owners of potato fields so infected to properly spray them, and have had splendid coopera tion. Arsenate of lead is the poison scd and is preferable over Paris gTeen for two reasons: First, it stays hi suspension in the water; and sec-; end, it adheres readily to the leaves, not being casly washed off. We have been using 3 pounds to 50 gallons of water for the adults and have been very successful in killing them. If you should find the insects in your potato field you will probably find them in small colonies and not scattered over the entire field. If you find small colony working on a smal area of potato vines thoroughly spray the vines on which they are working and those immediately around them. But it is also necessary to go over the entire patch and wherever they appear treat them as outlined above. One More Silo. Why You Cannot Compare the Vessels According to Tonnage. The different uses of tonnage terms when speaking of ships are causes of confusion to the lay mind, states Cap tain C. A. For example, steamship companies in order to im press upon the traveling public the I size and consequent relative safety of weir era win uuveruse cue sailing or a certain steamer of 20,000 tons, mean ing, of course, gross tons. The com pany's agent, in entering ber at the custom bouse, will take great precau tion to certify that she is of only 7,340 tons when paying tonnage taxes. He then is referring to her net tonnage, and, hi fact, that standard is used only when paying dues or taxes. Displacement tonnage Is almost ex clusively applied to warships, as they do not carry cargoes. Strange to say, the tonnage of a battleship varies al most hourly, as coal or other weighty objects are used or taken on board. The tonnage of warships is,' however, Axed. They are referred to In terms of the fixed tonnage. A statement that a 10,000 ton battle ship sank a 10,000 ton merchant ship does not mean that the ships were of equal size. The merchant ship would be much tho larger owing to the dif ferent meanings of the term "ton" as applied to the two types of vessels. It is absolutely impossible to give rules for the relations of these terms, as the conditions vary too greatly. Generally speaking, the gross tonnage of a ship is from 50 to 100 per cent greater than the net tonnage. Tons displacement are always in excess of tons gross. Deadweight tonnage Is on an average from 30 to 50 per cent greater than gross tonnage. THE BIBLE NEGLECTED. Though Still the Best Seller, It Is Not Read as It Used to Be. It involves a crumping of the popular vocabulary, as no other liter ary masterpiece is such u well of Kng lish pure and undelllcd. It Involves n dulling of literary perceptions, us liter ature abounds lu Biblicul allusions which every reader of the Bible In stantl.v understands, but which only readers of the Bible ever cau. Finally it involves u failure to respond to many a good joke, as an astonishing percentage of the best quips are noth ing more or less than Biblicul allusions. It is mainly useless, we realize, to propose a course of self enforced Bible reading for adulta. We insist,' how ever, that parents who want their chil dren to get the most enjoyment out of life may well see to it that then: chil dren develop an acquaintance with the Bible. It is the basis of keen speech. It is the basis of intelligent reading. It Is the busis of culture.
