Otto Ballborn stopped off in La
Grande last night on his -way to Lew-iston.
C. E. Short, manager of the J. C.
Penney store, went to Enterprise to
day on business.
' Louis B. Christ, manager of Kulo
la's Hawaiian-, arrived in the city this
morning. He reports that the Ha
waiians played to a big business in
Pendleton last night and that their
audiences were well pleased. Mr.
Christ is a well-known Portland the
atrical man, formerly connected with
the Orpheum, Baker and Star thea
ters. He left' this morning for a trip
up the branch.
J. G. Holm, of Hug's grocery, has
gone to Wallowa Lake for an outing.
J. G. Snodgrass and son went fish
ing today on Catherine Creek.
James Kapellas was one of thone
drafted. His number was 628. He is
too far down the list to be on the first
call.
W. P. Mohr and brother - Harry
Mohr, both of the Grande Ronde Meat
Company, have returned from an 1800
mile auto trip along the Oregon coast
with an accident. They were accom
panied by Harry Mohr, Jr. ''

Mrs. Ida Smoot Duscnberry, sister
of Senator Kced Smoot of Utah, and
faer daughter Margaret, spent Monday
in our city as guests of their old
friend Mrs. A. 8. Geddes. Mrs. Duscn
borry is returning from the N. E. A.
at Portland. She also visited Vic
toria, B. C, Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane,
and other Washington cities on a lec
ture tour. She has traveled extensive
ly both in Europe and the United
States but is loud in her praises of
the beauty of Oregon. She has been
a member of the faculty of the Brig
ham Young University of Utah. She
and her daughter loft on No. 18 for
their home in Salt Lake.

iting Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Conkey. They
have been touring California.

Gus Moser still has ambitions, and
is a formidable candidate. Gus got a
good walloping the last time he Tan,
but came back and was elected state
senator by a good vote. He had him
self elected president of the senate
and didn't overlook any chances to
nurse his ambition while at that of-

headquarters at St Paul. It is reach
ing out into other states of the North'
west and already is fairly well en
trenched in Oregon. At the recent
session of the state Grange at As
toria tne ague was invited lo or
ganize its membership in Oregon. It
operates principally among farmers,
and as the farming population is not
as gTeat, proportionately, in Oregon
as in North Dakota its influence here
is not likely to be so powerful. How
ever, the Grange has a close working
agreement with the State Federation
of Labor and in that way the new or
ganization can do a whole lot to sway
an election. The combination might
prove the oolance of power in a con
test split up between six or eight
candidates.
