There is much to see and the manage ment' have departed somewhat from the old fashioned, stereotyped street fair or carnival. There are at least 20 attractions. The Whip, which occuuies the center - - or cne "Ulaaway," as the circus grounds are called this week, is a show in itself. The Whip idea is new. It is as much fun to watch our friends ride as it is to ride ourselves. You cannot describe the sensation. You must experience it before you can give the least description of it. The big Wild Animal Show, with several good animal acts, caught on in great shape as did the Miracle, a sort of style show. In this place a well formed young woman poses with a change of costume that is as startling as it is beautiful. The Arabian Nights, an Oriental spectacle was well received. The wat?r show has for their feature Miss Anna Morecroft, a precocous miss who is as much at home in the water as you could imag ine. Bluey-Bluey in the side show has a faculty of getting more laughs than most any fun mnker we have seen for days. Any other method of applying water to the human body should be ex pressed in other terms, not as tism. Merchants To Celebrate. Portland, July 24. (Special) Au gust 6 to 11 tho merchants of Oregon, Washington and Idaho will celebrate their "wooden wedding" with the job bers and wholesalers of Portland. It will be the fifth annual Buyers' Week' at Portland, the thing which has done more to unite the business men of the Northwest that any other single event. The wooden wedding idea is going to be featured to signify five happy years of united effort. Portland men will pay the bills ac cording to the usual custom and will provide unusual entertainment for all their guests. Portland invites all the merchandising people of the North west to participate. Buyers' Week has been steadily growing in favor since its inception. The first year there were only a few retailers of the up-state districts who accepted invitations. The attendance has steadily increased with each re curring season, until last year almost every village, town and city were rep resented by numerous merchants. Buyers' Week grows because it is based on business principles. Mer chant have long since found that when they know the personnel of their trade they can best supply their needs. That principle applies between the jobber and the retailer as well. Through 'Buyers' Week privileges the up-state dealer comes to know the heads of the great jobbing concerns at Portland, he inspects their large stocks and is enabled to make many purchases with the idea in mind of fitting the taste of some particular persons among his Irade, he is en abled to get late ideas about advertis ing and displaying his goods, and in dozens of different ways the retailer receives benefits. Every Portland business house details an expert to give his or her whole time to visiting merchants. For many merchants, Buyers' Week is a vacation his only one of the year. Theilofore, amusements are provided each evening and each noon. This year a number of new stunts are planned, so that every moment will be fully occupied. In peace times this orga nization hunted white slavers, anti drug law violators, and other offend ers. Now it hunts German spies and pro-kuiserites. 2. The Secret Service, headed by Chief Flynn. Its main duties are to catch counterfeiters for the Treasury Department, and furnish the Presi dent a secret service squad. 3 Secret police systems of other government departments such as postoff ice inspectors to- nab mail law violators. The army and navy have their own means of getting information of mili tary value. The biggest job right now is war work. The Secret Service throws its tentacles in every direction feeling for plotters against the President. The Bureau of Investigation musses dis loyalty schemes. The army and navy sleuths dig into enemy war plans. 4 In their hunt for anti-American agi tators, Uncle Sam's secret police mingle with crowds, participate in mass meetings, use the telephone. If a mob gathers, the chances are a quiet gentleman with a little badge in his pocket is among those present. They incline an eai to the ravings of pro Germans and by mysterious methods become aware of what America's foes are doing in Berlin as well as in New York. Through channels Sherlock Holmes could never discover reports come regularly into Washington, and ord ers go out.
