The clever Morosco slurs, Kuthlyn Williams and House Peters, will be seen at the Arcade today and tomor row in a picturization of Willurd Mack's thrilling story, "The Highway of Hope," which was especially pre pared for the screen by Harvey Gates. Knthlyn Williams as Lonely Lou, the drudge of a mining town, later transformed into a wealthy mine owner, presents a remarkable char acterization. In her first appearance on the screen in this production she is seen industriously scrubbing a flight of steps with Boap and water. Later, when she has made her for tune, she has a splendid opportunity to display a number of beautiful gowns. The scenes of "The Highway of Hope" are laid either in the desert or in desert towns and the Morosco company was fortunato enough to fiimous abandoned mining towns in Death Valley. This town, in the early davs of the gold rush, was the home of four or five thousand industrious souls. Men lived, fought and died in its streets and in its gambling holes. The Tush for gold swept on and gradually the citizens rushed away until now there is nothing left but vow after row of abandoned buildings which in dry desert air are in a re markable state of preservation, and which are occupied but occasionally by some "desert rat," who with his pock burrows pauses over night in his jcurney across the valley to hunt the gold hidden in the distant Panamint mountains. The subsequent scenes of th active mining town were taken on the other side of the range to which the occupants of the first village fled. The cast supporting Miss Williams and Mr. Peters is one of unusual ex cellence, including Jim Farley and Hurry de Vcre. LEGAL NOTICE Notice to Creditors. Notice is hereby given that the rww"-?l'wr,T--;i';'wv"T'' As a special mid-summer attrac-' tion extraordinary, is is announced that the ever-popular Herbsts are coming to La Grande next week to render a recital. This wonderful duo of musicians are sojourning in Union for the summer and the Lpworth l eague of the Methodist church in this city has shown its enterprise by closing arrangements with Mr. and Mrs. Herbst for a recital commenc ing at 8:15 Tuesday, July 31. It is unnecessary to go into great detail about the merits, of this wonderful couple. The west and particularly Oregon is proud of their ability; in La Grande, for instance, whenever oppor tunity is given to hear Ina Herbst Wiight or Gottfried Herbst the pub lic is quick to grasp the chance. Their scintillating career began in the capitals of Europe. There Mrs. Hetbst-Wright's wonderful voice tal ent was developed under the world's best tutors, and her splendid grace and exceptional gifts quickly won for here renown in critical and elete mu sical circles. Her tours in America have been wonderfully successful. In brief, Ina Herbst-Wright is one of the most sought-after sopranos in the West today. But her 'husband is himself an artist a rare artist. Ho too has chaimed the best musical audience of Europe and in America. Following are' characteristic press comment of the artists: The violin virtuso, Herr Herbst of Coburg-Gotha, has proven himself a thorough artist in the big Kursaal concerts, achieving a great success yesterday at the soloists' concert, with his masterly reproduction of the Men delssohn concerto. Oberlacndisches Volksblatt, Interlakem, Switzerland. 9 iln Herr Herbst, a young violinist of great ability, we have made a very pleasant acquaintance. The ease with which he overcame all obstacles was astonishing. The many chords and octave pussages in the Vieuxtemps concerto caused him no difficulty whatever, and his staccato, both inthe up and the down strokes, is an ac quisition for which many great ar tists can envy him many not being able to accomplish it even after years of patient study. Zeitung, Stock holm, Sweden. A most delightful song recital was that given at Miss Harker's school yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock by Mme. Ina Herbst-Wright. The first number, Schubert's "Ave Maria," sung with a grasp and poise of an artist, assured the audience of n recital of unusual and superior character. Of the succeeding num bers, each one of which had its pe culiar charm, perhaps "Die Lorelei" by Liszt for sympathetic interpreta tion, "Villanclle" by Dell 'Aqua for remarkable fluency and clarity of tone, and the aria from "La Traviata" for dramatic effect, stand out especially. The singer graciously responded to several encores. Daily Palo Alta Times. Are You One of Them? There are a great many people who would be very much benefited by tak ing Chamberlain's Tablets for a weak or disordered stomach. Are you one of them? Mrs. M. R. Searl, Bald winsville, N. Y relates her experience in the use of theso tablets: "I had a bad spell with my stomach about six months ago, and was troubled for two or three weeks with gas and severe pains in the pit of my stomach. Our druggist advised me to take Chamber lain's Tablets. I took a bottle home and the first dose relieved me wonder fully, and I kept on taking them until I was cured." These tablets do not relieve pain, but ofter the pain has been relieved may prevent itsrecur rence. Adv. Knocks Out Superstition. f S J J 1 ? i w fit i Is MME. INA HERHST WRIGHT.
