An Open Letter From Utz & Dunn Co.
(Makers of strictly high-grade footwear for. Women) showing the compari
son of costs between cheap shoes andhigh grade shoes. :. ' .. , ' '
THE GOLDEN RULE CO., La Grande, Ore. . . ' ' ,
Gentlemen: We are in receipt of your favor of the 20th asking us to give you
comparative costs on bottom stock, etc., of the materials as used in the best grade of
all leather shoes, and the materials used in cheap shoes. '
As we make only the better grade of goods we are not thoroughly- posted as to
the cost of materials used in cheaper shoes; and, of course, can give you only the
figures that apply to Women's Shoes, as we do not make or handle any other runs, but
for the average weight Women's Shoe the approximate comparative costs are as
follows: , '
Cheap Shoes
Hemlock soles . .,,
Fiber Counters
Fiber Toe Boxes
Fiber Insoles
Pieced Heels
.3Bc
. 2c
. 1c
. 5c

Best oak sole leather .'Mi ,45c
Best oak counters .... 9c
Best oak toe ibox , 6c
Best grain leather insoles ,18c
Full lift solid heels . , , ....12c
90c
You will note that the total cost of the bottom stock mentioned above used in
the better grade of all leather shoes amounts to 90c per pr.,,whilo in the cheap shoes
the same items cost approximately 49c per pr. -
There is, of course, more or less variation' in these figures from time to time,
and some slight differences due to different grades and selections that might be used,
but the prices quoted above very closely approximate the average cost of the items
mentioned.'
, Very truly yours, '
