gether butter and sugar, add beaten
egg and salt, then add alternately
milk and flour sifted with baking
nowder. Put two tablespoonfuls fruit
in each buttered cup, cover with bat-

eign demand for American motor
trucks had added a tremendous im
petus to the industry in the United
States during the past "three years he
emphasized the fact that our own
Government's entry into the war
would create a corresponding demand
for trucks and drivers.
"Motor trucks are already compet
ing.! successfully with railroads in a
creat manv instances so that the de
mimd for them will not be confined
entirely to our government require
ments." said Mr. Norton. "It is cerT
tain that 75,000 trucks will be neces
sarv for the first big American, ex
peditionary force. The supplying of
these trucks to the government will
be confined to those manufacturers
whose construction and design con
form to government specifications and
these manufacturers will be guaran
teed prompt delivery of parts and
raw materials by the War Depart
ment" "It is no impossible that older men
and possibly women may be needed to
replace experienced truck drivers who
will be needed for government ser
vice and in the truck manufacturer s
sales organizations older salesmen
will be needed to take the place of the
younger men. who enter the govern
ment service. All of these conditions
tend to prove that ,the motor truck
business is destined for a generous
expansion rather than depression and

Joseph, July 13. (Special) The
"ol' swimmin' hole" is a popular place
these days when the temperature
stays between 95 and 101 degrees.
Yesterday (Thursday the 12th) two
Joseph families started on a motor
trio to Yellowstone Park. The motor
ists are the families of L. E. Cavineas
and Geo. Salladay. The trip will cov.
er the principal cities of Idaho, North
ern Utah. Western Wyoming and
Southwestern Montana, in order that
a sort of a circle will be formed and
no road traversed twice.
A very interesting meeting of the
Ladies' Aid was held on Friday after
noon at the Hugh Wilson home just
north of town.
Mrs. H. A. Sonne and children, ot
Baker City, are in Joseph visiting
Mrs. Sonne's mother, Mrs. Asa M

F. H. Gaulke left Sunday for Port
land. After attending to some busi
ness matters in that city he will leave
via Spokane for a business trip in

ily, of Eugene, and Mrs. Asa McCully
were entertained at dinner Thursday
evening at the F. F. McCully homo
on upper Main street. After a de

Mrs. McCully and her daughter games,
music and a sort of family reunion
wore enjoyed.
Mrs. Edward Borland was operated
upon at the La Grande hospital on
Thursday.; Tho doctors report Mrs.
Berland's condition highly satisfac
tory.
Mrs. F. II. Gaulke delightfully en
tertained a party of friends at a lunch
eon on Friday the 13th, at the Ander
son cottage at the head of Lake Wal
lowa. Those present were Mesdamen
