(United Press) For the average American woman who wants. to help her coun try in this war by going to the front as nurse there is no hope of her ever realizing her wish. Only, graduate trained nurses are chosen by the American Red Cross for war hospital service. And nurses' aids are also specially trained and chosen with the extremest care. In previous wars, women nurses were not infrequently seen on the battle field. In war today they never get any closer to the front than the base hospital, which gener ally is out of sound of the cannonad ing. The machine gun and the bar rage of modem warfare 'has forced the retirement of women into safer fields. Uncle Sam's sick and wounded in France will receive as good care as they could get in any hospital in the United States. The best surgeons and the best nurses in the country are going with the troops. When the American Red Cross was organized in 1905 the principle was adopted that not merely trained nurses but nurses of character and ex- periemced vouched for by recognized 'hospitals could be enrolled in the Red Cross service. She receives $50 per month while in service. Her hours of work at the base hospital are irregular but mostly long. I wish you would publish the following letter in justice to myself, as a wrong impression has gotten out. Since . last school election when I was candidate for school director I have been severely criticized by my Catholic friends for the position I took, towit: "That I would oppose the appointment of any Catholic teacher, for this reason and this reason only, that the Roman Catholic system was against our public schools." I here by challenge any Catholic to come out public in the paper and say that that statement, towit: "That the Ro man Catholic system is against our public schools7' is not true. All I ask is that they publicly deny the truth of same in the paper, then the burden of proof is upon me and I will prove it in the paper. Another thing, they said I could not give the children free school books. I know it and never said I could. I said: "I pledge myself to work for free text books for all grades from the first to the eighth inclusive." And I would have. 1 would have in itiated a petition to get the question on the ballot and then worked for it, and 3T WOULD. HAVE PASSED I have no doubt. I thank all my friends for voting for me. Some have said I could have been elected had I not stated my plat form. I am not that kind of a man. I do my work in the open, and the way the Catholic votes Bhowed aparnst me shows that they believed that I meant what 1 said, and believe me, I did. E. W. EASTMAN. Farmers Dauchter Dons Overalls. "I had to lay by a number of times on account of rain, and lost about a week," said Miss Tucker, "but J final ly finished.
