(To the Edi tor) In Friday's issue of June 22 I notice the second attempt of Rev. Up ton H. Gibbs to refute my statement in my published sermon in which I claimed that the Greek word from which the English word baptize is de rived never can be consistently ren dered "sprinkle." Mr. Gibbs labors hard to defend his church practice of affusion but ignores the most import ant facts determining the question at issue. In my late reply to him I gave him proof from his own and ablest authorities that the original mode of baptism was an immersion of the whole person in the water; further more that this specific action was necessary to meet the antecedent requisites for baptism. Now it ought to impress tho honest seeker after truth that when I can call into court testimony in my favor from the best in the ranks of my opponent that my claims are un doubtedly sustained. If on the other hand the word baptizo meant or could be rendered sprinkle why did not the scholars just say so? How is it that not one real standard Greek lexicon gives what Mr. Gibbs claims is one of its meanings that is sprinkle. Now if Mr. Gibbs can produce such a lex icon that gives sprinkle as a derivitivo of baptizo I will pay $50 to the "Red Cross" society. This offer is extend ed to any clergyman of La Grande and I will publically retract my utter ance on that question. I will further affirm that tho word from which our translators have derived. BARITONE. vestigation might ask the question why did the translators of the sacred writings (when they came to the word baptizo) anglirize it instead of giving us its English equivalent? Does it not appear reasonable that those noted churchmen who practice sprinkling would be happy to seize on to a secondary meaning to favor their practice if it could be done with out lowering their standards as re putable scholars? T will now Briefly examine Mark 7:4 which is relied upon to prove sprinkling as one of the modes of baptism. Vatabuius Professor of He brew in Paris says of Mark 7:4, "They wash themselves all over." Grohns, the great German writer, says, "they cleansed themselves more carefully from defilement contracted at the market, towit: not only by washing of hands, but by immersing the body." Then as to the washing of beds I would inform Mr. Gibbs that often such beds were nothing mote than a quilt or cloth that could he easily irrfmersed. Again modern text ual critics have, with striking oneness of sentiment, decided that Klinon, the word for "tables or couches" is an interpolation. We are told that be cause Households were baptized in New Testament times that infants must he included or that it is justi fiable to conclude that such was the case. The burden of proof is upon Mr. Gibbs if he can prove that all households contain infants then his logic will have weight hut not other wise. Suppose I said I baptized the household of Rev. Gibbs would it he safe to conclude that I baptized an ir fant? Xot unless a figurative use of the term used. Xow on the question of infant haptism I would asrnin impress the fact on the minds of all who read this discussion that 1 find no proof from reliable history that any infant was baptized during the first and second centuries.
