the market yesterday with a fairly
good run the market held good in all
lines.
Cattle receipts totaled 140 head;
Hog receipts totaled 460 head.

Congressman Now Corpora.
Detroit, June 29. (Specal) Ed
win Denby, age 47, probably the most
distinguished American to enlist in
the ranks at the first call to arms,
was promoted to the rank of Corporal
m the United States Marine Corps
today. Mr. Denby was a member of
congress from 1!)04 to 1911, former
President of the local Board of Com
merce, and a prominent attorney of
this city.
Corporal Denby, who is undereoincr
military training at Port Royal, S. C,
headed the list in a competitive ex
amination open to all members of his
company. His enlistment as a private
in the Marine Corps caused consider
able comment when he expressed the
belief that he could serve his country
best as an enlisted man.

It must be remembered that it was
two women who had the say as to my
admittance to this gathering of the
people, of Russia. My final experi
ence seemed to me like asking Emma
Goldman for a pass to the national
dramatic convention.
I have simply cited these instances
to show that the women are equals
of the men ki the New Russia.
Today that equality was even more
strikingly illustrated by the celebra
tion of May Day. The workers of
Russia, following the long-established
custom of all Europeans (which they,
themselves, in the days of the Czar
never dared to observe) remained ab
sent from work and paralyzed Rus
sia into an enforced holiday.
And there were as many women as
there were men in the parade. Many
marched arm in arm with men com
rades, and the voices of hundreds of
thousands of iwomero mingled with
those of as many men in the chant of
the Internationalist Socialists' Union.
It's true that women rank with men
in the new Russia. It doesn't seem to
have occurred to anybody that there
might be any question about it.
