Cherries.
Oregon Agricultural College, Cor
vallis, June 27. (Special) Take
fresh, ripe cherries; wash and pit;
pack the jar as full as you can; add
the boiling syrup made by using 3
quarts of sugar to 2 quarts water and
boiled sufficiently to dissolve all the
sugar. Cover and Bterilize in hot
water bath 16 minutes.
Salted cherries to be used as a
relish Take perfect cherries; do not
pit or stem; pack the jars with the
cherries and to a quart jar add 1
tablespoon' salt and 1-4 cup vinegar.
Fill the jars to overflowing with cold
water and seal. If the sour cherries
are used you need not add vinegar.
Cherries may be sun preserved the
same as strawberries.
There are many ways that canned
cherries may be used aside from sauce.
They are very good in salads. Cher
ries, apples, pineapple, and nuts are
a good combination' for salad. Cher
ries may also be stuffed with filbert
! nuts and used as salad,
i Cherry Roll.
2 cups flour, I teaspoon salt, 1 table.
spoon sugar, 2 teaspoons baking p w
der, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 egg, 1 cup
milk.
Make as for biscuits and roll thin so
that the length is twice its width.
Spread cherries over this, keeping
within an inch of the edge. Roll like
jelly cake, pressing the ends firmly
so that the fruit will not escape. Place
roll on one side of the baking pan,
pour over and around it i cup sugar,
2 cups of hot juice from the canned
cherries, and 1 tablespoon butter.

hospital work.

Today's War Recipe.
(From Britian's Official Win-the-War
Cook Book.)
Barley Bread Twelve ounces of
barley flour, eight ounces of whole
meal, eight ounces of flour, one tea
spoonful of salt, one teaspoonful of
castor sugar, half an ounce of yeast,
three gills of tepid water. Mix the
flour and salt and place in a warm
basin. Make a well in the center of
the flour. Cream the yeast and sug
ar in a small warm basin, pour in the
tenid water, stir, and then pour in the
center of the flour. Cover and let
rise for three-quarters of an hour,
then mix in, and knead well on a
floured board. Divide the dough, and
put it into greased tins, then leave un
til it rises to the top of the tins (it
will take half an hour). Bake in an
oven for from three-quarters of an
hour to an' hour. When the bread is
baked the loaf sounds hollow if tap
ped underneath.

that he was no slacker. Martin was
