Bohnenkamp has re ceived the following letter from her nephew, Lee Bradway, a La Grande high school boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bradway, of La Grande who is in the U. S. Field Artillery: Fort McDowell, Cal., June 1. Dear Aunt Jennie: 1 received your letter yesterday and was vcy glad to get it. I have been assigned to Honolulu and am leaving June 5. The -voyage will take 9 days, so I expect to recover from any attack of mal de ftier before I arrive in Honolulu. ' I think I am the only boy from La Grande who has been sent to Hono lulu during the present war. If we go to France we will prob ably travel on around so that by the time I get homo I will have circum navigated the globe. . Honolulu ought to be an ideal train ing place. AH the previous service men say it is a fine place to go. We all received our foreign service uniforms today. They are made of much lighter material than the olive drab that Company M wears and a little different color. .We ore certainly a happy bunch to night. Everybody is glad that they are leaving Angel Island. The infan try drill we received here was not very exciting compared to what is be fore us. (Special) No general embargo on exports from the United States is intended, either on any particular class of articles or against any particular country, Dr. E. B. Pratt, chief of the bureau of for eign and domestic commerce, de clared here. Dr. Pratt came from Washington to confer with officials of the New York bureau. WAR PROSPERITY HITS WASHINGTON (Washington, June 25. (United Press) War prosperity has hit Wash ington and those who hav trooms to rent are getting rich. The capitol's population is growing rapidly. Every train brings its load. War talk fills the air. The government and the various in dustries that have established war headquarters here will need 50,000 more clerks before the dog days, ac cording to conservative estimates. Al ready there is a famine in stenog raphers. Uncle Sam commandeered them. Now government offices are spring ing up all over the city. Department offices which for generations have been small, quiet affairs have sudden ly become bloated to 20 times their usual size. This means more em ployes. The restaurants are busier than Coney Island chowder kitchens. The street cars are almost always Jammed to the guards and frequently blockaded. Apartment houses have been made into hotels residences into apartments. In some cases startling prices are demanded for cots. All rents are upward bound.
