Nixon, La Grande, D. D. No. 1.) San Francisco, June 11, 1917. Dear Mother: I have been here al most a week and like it fine so far. And this detention camp, so I am told, is the worst part of it. I was vaccinated a few days ago and also had a T. P. shot in the other arm. Will get two more, I guess. Some of the lads faint when they get their shots. I saw two of them fall over while I was up for mine. I guess there were 150 of us in the bunch I went up with, i There were almost 200 men arrivals in camp yesterday. They surely are pouring in here every day. How did registration day pass in La Grande? I went up and volun teered the last day of May. I could not stand the idea of being conscrip ted. That word surely does not soiind good to me. I am rated ns fireman 2nd. There are many 3rd rate firemen here and about 19 2nd class men. i I expect I will make pretty good money here and have a good chance to learn the machinist trade. So you see when we wollop the Dutchmen good and hard and my enlistment is up I will come out with two trades. Tell Dad he can do whatever he wants to -or things best with "Silver" as I am enlisted for four years, but I expect the war to be over before my enlistment is up. I will have a chance for first-rate fireman and believe me I expect to be a first-rate man inside of a year. ! I didn't want to go to war any worse thaw nnyone else, but I did the only thing that was honorable as it appeared to me. (Special) Cattle receipts. for last week have been very moderate only 680 head be ing offered, being one of the smallest on record. There has been practically no change in the prices since the first of the week, most of the receipts in cluded half dairy cows with only a few bunches of steers. There is a con tinued call for good cattle and the market is firm on these grades. Best beef steers are being quoted at $9.50 to $10.00, good steers $8.75 $9.25; best cows $8.00 to $8.50; heifers $8.00 to $9.00; the stocker and feeder di vision has a spelndid outook, liberal receipts are expected and cattle men will have excellent opportunity to tret just what they want. Hogs. Hog receipts totaled around 3G00 head, though the market has dropped at least 15 cents during the week, prime heavy hogs are getting $15.10 with the bulk going at $15; pigs are selling from $12.00 to S13.C0. Sheep Sheep receipts for the wen!? are 5200 head; the m.irket has dropped since Monday about 25 cents on lambs, 50 cents on ewes wethers and year lings; shorn yearlings are selling from $8.00 $10.50 shorn ewes $7.00 $9.00; best spring lambs $1.50 (j? $13.75.
