La Grande is proud of its Annual Chautauqua. It lin no hesitation in invitincr all its friends and neighbors to attend and . to enjoy the splendid program which has been arranged. The Chautauqua is an interesting insti tution. It offers rest and recreation to the weary. Held in a beautiful grove, it suggests the gatherings of the old philosophers and their followers in the classic groves ofi? Greece. If the mountain will not come to Mahomet, we will go to the mountain. So we gather in a shady retreat, and bring the great orators, the great preachers, the great thinkers and publicists to us. We also do not forget that old and young like to hear the best music, to -be made to laugh, to be amused, so we bring from far and near the humorists, the musicians, the manikins for the children. The Chautauqua brings country and city together, makes them better acquainted, it is a mixer, a leveler, a great social institution. The country people read more than the city people, the latter are in greater need of the mental stimulus of the Chautauqua. It is to the city people especially that we appeal to go to the Chautauqua and camp, to get a change of scene, a change in mode of life, to make new friends, 'and to be mentally refreshed by speech, music, fun and good fresh air. O THE SPEED 'EM UP. The "Speed 'Em Up" is the west's great automobile and motorcycle race meet. It brings racers to La Grande from aU over the United States. It presents an interesting spectacle. The races are managed and conducted by La Grande's enterprising young men united as a Motor Club. The public can be assured of several things, that the races will be, on the square and highly interesting, that the visi tors to' the city will be received with La Grande's well known hospitality, and that everything possible will be done for their entertainment and comfort. Come to the "!Speed 'Em Up".. ; 0 NOW FOR THE RED CROSS DRIVE The success of the Liberty Bond issue in Oregon is grati fying indeed.
