ture Says We May Be Called

A part of America's food problem is
to make provision for helping to feed
the population of the central powers
after thcr war, according to Carl Vroo
man, assistant secretary of agriculture.
"If the war ends this yeur, or when
ever It ends," he said, "a purt of the
task of the United States will be to
help feed the people of German and
her allies, who will assuredly ho in
dire need when they stop fighting.
"This war." he continued, "is a war
against famine. It will he wou by the
uution that can best supply itself and
its allies with food."
Mr. Vrooman bus just couio from a
tour of the southern and southwestern
states, where he was sent by the de
partment of agriculture to urge greater
food production. He said the depart
ment had been assured hy the farmers
of tho south and west that they would
add 20 per cent to their normal pro
duction of crops. He advised Bouthcrn
farmers to raise less tobacco and more
gralu.
Mr. Vroomnn said that the prospects
for a big wheat crop In tho United
Stntes were poor. He also said that
Argentina would have a small crop.
Ho expected the United States gov
ernment to follow the lead of Euro
pean governments in prescribing "war
bread" that is, bread that used all of
tho wheat. He estimated this would
mean a saving of from 40,000,000 to
50,000,000 bushels of wheut a year la
America.
"With the farmers of the United
States doing their part to better the
food situation," he said, "It is the part
of the city dwellers to help by conserv
ing the supply."
He said $700,000,000 a year in food
was wasted in the kitchens of the
United States and urged the house
wives to practice economy lu food and
to teach their cooks to practice economy.
"The average American when he goea
