German soldiers now being taken prisoners by the French along the en tire front between the Aisne and Saint Quentin declare without excep tion to their captors that they realize they aro 'going to bo shot and are quite prepared for it. While the Germans manifestly have various aims in view in their systematic policy of reducing every inch of French soil occupied by them to a wasteless desert, the French mil itary authorities have been able to es tablish definitely from the German prisoners captured that not the least , of these objects is to iject the morale of desperation into the German army. I The latter are told not only that t tney win De instantly killed if they, fall into the hands of the French, but i that unless they fight to the death in an effort to keep the Allied troops from reaching German soil their own homes, farms and villages will quite naturally suffer the same fate by way of reprisal that they have in flicted on the homes, farms and vil lages of France. German soldiers now being1 taken prisoners as well as other sources confirm the fact that it was Hinden burg who conceived teh idea for the wholesale devastation of all territory which the Germans are forced to abandon. It is under his orders that nil German regiments now falling back on the western front have regu larly appointed crows whose sole bus iness it is to destroy all property and to leave every inch of the ground that goes back int othe hand of the French a veritable desert. CHERRY BLOSSOMS FALLING. Cherry orchnrdists have been per plexed at the unusual and mysterious falling off of their cherry blossoms, there being no signs of disease or frost. It has come to light that the long looked for and muohi dreaded English sparrow is the lad that is causing the trouble. They nip off the bloom as dexterously as am expert could with a pair of scissors, letting them fall to the ground with no other apparent motive than just to see them fall. I understand -that the railroad yards are becoming quite a breeding place for them. A war of extermination is the only remedy. Any process of poisoning, ordinarily, would be fatal to other birds, es pecially on the farms, .but might be used about such places as railroad yards, etc where other birds do not frequent.
