Among the many questions aked
every day at the office of the Adju
tant Ger.era! regarding requirements
of the war census, to be held Tuesday,
June 5, the following are typical:
1. "I am a man 30 years old. I
will be 31 on June 20. Do I have to
register on War Census Day?"
The answer is, Yes. Every male
resident between the ages of 21 and
30 years, inclusive, must register. In
other words, every man who has
passed his 21st bi-thday and has not
passed his 31st birthday, must reg
ister.
If a man's 31st birthday should fall
on June 5, the date of the war census,
he is then 31 years old and not sub
ject to registration. If he is 31 years
old the next day, June 6, then he must
register.
2. "I am a British subject, 28
years old. I tried to enlist in the
Oregon National Guard, but was re
jected on account of poor physical
condition. Do I have to register?"
Yes. All male residents between
the ages of 21 and 30 years, inclusive,
must register under penalty of im
prisonment. This includes aliens of
any nationality, Japanese, Chinese,
ilritish, Germans, Austrians, Mexi
can or otherwise. One purpose of the
war census is to obtain data as to the
number and occupation of all aliens
of military age. An alien, of course,
will not be subject to military ser
vice, but he must register.
3. "Does a man who will bo 21
years old the day before War Census
day have to register?"
Yes. And if he is 21 years old on
War Census day itself, he must reg
ister. If he is not 21 years old until
June 6, he docs not have to register.
4. "My age is 39 years and I am
a farmer. Am 1 subject to penalty if
I do not register?"
No. Only male residents between
the ages of 21 and 30 years, inclusive,
are subject to registration.

and coffee were served and despite
the cold disagreeable weather a good
crowd attended.
Mr. Bert Var.devanter, of Medical
Springs, who has been seriously ill
for sometime died at her home Tues
day. A husband and three small chil
dren survive. The funeral was held
at the home at one o'clock yesterday
afternoon.
Pearl Brooks, engineer of the O.-W.
here was called to Baker, where his
wife is very sick.
Roy Forrester is relieving Mr.
Brooks during his absence.
Miss Victoria Ca'.ihan'of Union is
visiting at the Bellos home in Pyle
canyon.
Mrs. Ed. Wuef is suffering from a
broken ankle caused by a fall.
F. A. Eamis was a passenger on
No. 6 today for Baker.
Murray Anderson, of Haines, is
visiting Weling Eames this week.
It will cost the State of California
$15,000 to change from execution by
hanging to elactrocution.

chartered by Congress. It is the
only volunteer agency for relief
commissioned by the Government
in case of war or overwhelming
disaster.
The President of the United
States is President of the Society.
The Red Cross reports to Con
gress; its accounts are audited by
the War Department; all that it
does is open to public scrutiny.
Since 1905 the American Red
Cross has rendered valuable aid in
88 disasters. It has received and
expended more than $15,000,000 in
money and relief supplies.
Thousands of families have been
helped and kept together; suffer
ing has been relieved; and greater
misery prevented. Its work also
includes preventive and educational
measures.
No other agency provides so
practical an opportunity for help
ing humanity in times of great
crises, when the need is urgent, and
the measures for relief must be
prompt and adequate.
