week ending May 16 follows:

I herewith submit my report for the
week ending May 16, 1917.
Fire chief's report fov the week
shows no fires. Fire chief has em
ployed a new truck driver, Curtis
Lindsey, who commenced work Mon
day the 14th.
Water Superintendent reports ex
penditure for the week of $63.00,
which included lowering freeze-ups,
cleaning ditch from septic tank to
uokler place, inspection of tin sewer,
making taps and repairing leaks. As
street superintendent he, expended $13
for labor, to be paid for by the county.
This was for work on river to keep
water from cutting through park.
Chief of police reports number of
arrests to be two, traffic violations
one, begging one; number convicted
two; amount of fines ten ($10.00) dol
lars. Amount received from pound
eleven dollars and seventy-five cents
($11.75).

As per instructions of commission
have prepared contract between City
of La Grande and the Oregon-Wash
ing Railroad and Navigation Co. Same
has been placed in the hands of Sup
erintendent Bollons for consideration
by him.
Water Superintendent L. M. Hoyt
and myself visited Beaver Creek Res
ervoir. Went up over wagon road
and came back over pipe line. Found
road impassable from Jordan s slope
on to reservoir. Many places snow
was found to be from two to four feet
deep. A few slides and washouts have
occurred, making it impossible to taKe
teams to reservoir, or for that mat
ter, it would be equally impossible to
use saddle or pack horses. We were
able to take saddle horses as far as
telephone box, but were compelled to
make the rest of the distance, about
eight miles, on foot. 'Did not find
Beaver Creek very high. The moun
tains around reservoir are covered
with a heavy snowfall, giving every
indication of a long water season. The
reservoir is covered with broken ice.
Gave official orders to Care-taker
Deal and his wife to remove from
present location and take up residence
above the dam.
Have consolidated office of water
and street superintendent, giving Mr.
Hoyt the duties of both offices.

erick McKenzie, deceased, has filed
her final account in the office of the
county clerk of Union county, Ore
gon, and that the county judge of said
county has fixed May 21, 1917, at 10
o'clock a. m., as the time, and the
county court room in the court house
at La Grande, Union county, Oregon,
as tho place for hearing objections to
said final account, and the settlement
of said estate.
