(Special) At a meeting of the school board on last Tuesday evening it was de cided to call school at 8:20 a. m., and dismiss at 2:50 p. m. so that the pu pils who have gardens can work in them. This act of the board has been met with general approval. J. P. Thomas and family moved to Baker yesterday to take charge of a branch 'of the Shanks bakery at that place. The good wishes of many friends go with them. Much interest is being shown in Red Cross work and an organization is likely to be formed soon. Miss Ava Milam of the Oregon Agricultural college gave an interest ing lecture on the Child Welfare subject at the Methodist church to day. The program opened with a saxaphone solo by Mrs. James Webb and closed with a vocal solo by Miss Eleanor Davis. There was a large attendance and much round table discussion. ACT QUICKLY. (Special) Although the United States Marine Corps made the announcement on April 28 that they had reached their then authorized war strength of 17, 400 men, the Necessary men were se cured two weeks before that timoj and were under training. Two brothers who were anxious to be ."first to fight" were enlisted on Friday, April 13. They were Robert Z. and. Thomas B. Necessary, sons of Mrs. Sallie Necessary, of Red Rock, Texas. "The response of red-blooded Amer icans to their country's call for addi tional marines has been particularly gratifying," said Major General George Barnett, Commandant of 'the Marine Corps, "and we anticipate no diflficulty in securing the 12,600 more which are likely to be authorized any day, and for which recruiting has al ready been started."
