John A. Carlson of this city just re
ceived a letter from his nephew in
Gothenburg, Sweden, dated March 3,
stating they were having a food fam
ine there, groceries -were scarce,
bread, rice, sugar and coffee could not
be bought. One can only 'buy one
quart of whiskey a month at $1.80 a
quart. Coal is so scarce the gas
plants have closed down and we have
no street lights at night The fac
tories and manufacturing plants are
all closing down too, one after an
other, which is causing hard times.
Work is scarce and if the war doesn't
stop soon I don't know what will be
come of us all, as those that do have
tho money to buy with are as bad off
as the ones that have no money, so I
wish we wore over there even if
groceries are high, as from your let
ter there must bo plenty of work for
