Sensitiveness to Moisture. ' Potatoes, like other plants have cer tain characteristics of growth. Pota toes are very sensitive to excess moisture. While, on the other hand, a shortage of moisture may be just as harmful, therefore, a "just right" potato crop means a "just right" moisture content of the soil. A smooth potato is not the result from having grown in cloddy or wet soils, or those soils which do not make room easily for uniform expansion of the tuber. With the potato crop a rich soil with poor tilth is no better than a poor soil with good mechanical tex ture, so far as the (relative values of good seed bed and fertilizers are con cerned. Potatoes usually make the best part of their growth in sixty days so tho plant food must be plenti ful and in a shape ready to be easily absorbed. Properly made commercial fertilizers, adapted to the individual soil in question, are sometimes a good investment. , . Soil Tilth Must Be good and Rotations Essential. Heavy clay loam soils being natur ally very fertile, attention to their working conditions is the first consid eration. Adding sufficient vegetable mutter to the soil to hold apart the fine -soil particles to make it more open, loose, mellow and easily worked is important. Crop rotations and good potatoes are mutual boosters. When talking in terms of big yields, the preparation of the soil for a pota to orop usually begins several years in advance. It may be too wet, neces sitating under drainage. If not rich in organic matter, a crop of clover or alfalfa stubble or a clover crop may be plowed under to furnish the neces sary amount of humus in the soil. Manure applied to the clover crop is fine practice, as we expect to get heavier clover stubblo in this way, which, when turned under, will aid in making the required humus addition. Deep'plowing should be done in the fall. It is a common mistake to start in the field .with intentions to plow ten inches deep while actually only plowing seven inches deep. Perhaps you would be turning up too much subsoil with ten-inch plowing the first year, so it may he better to take a term of years to do -it.' When we turn under our green crops or forage stubble on the lighter soils, cut it up with the disk first. Unless assured of - abundant earlv rains to rot the sod, or coarse manure turned under, we may have tho bad effect of checking the movement of water upward in the soil, by causing a porous layer to be formed, through which the water cannot be lifted. Small whole seed in cases where no effort is made to eliminate tho diesased and weak hills in the field from which the seed came,'' or little potatoes 'simply be cause they are of an unmarketable size, is bad practice. Try a few for experiment under vour conditions. Whole potatoes will .overcome many adverse, conditions that cut ones can not. In any event have two eyes on your cuttings and keep them in from the edge of tho cuttinsrs as fa as possible, so they may not dry out too quickly. With seed as it is this year, the question is a financial one, and cuttings may be the best practice.'
