Summerville, Ore., Apr. 23. (Spe
cial) Mr. and Mrs. Wi. L. Starr of
this 'place, and Miss Nellie Pool of
Dry creek, attended the Teachers' in
stitute at Elgin last Saturday. They
report a good attendance and able
discussions. We are sorry to note
that our estimable superintendent,
Mrs. A. E. Ivanhoe, still has to carry
her arm in a sling.
Mrs. Wiagonor and daughters, Lil
lian and Irene, have moved back to
the farm.
Those having cars hope to soon be
able to use them and some are drag
ging the roads in order to get them in
proper condition.
Some stock has been taken to the
mountains, hay becoming too scarce
with a number of farmers.

Two Famous Grapplers Will Contest
at Arcade Theatre Several Clever
Preliminaries Arranged.
John Berg, who will meet Jack
O'Neill in a finish wrestling match at
the Arcade theatre tonight, is here
and certainly looks like he will be
able to give a good account of him
self. He says he is in the pink of
condition and will offer no excuse if
he loses tiiis match.
O'Neill has trained faithfully for
the contest and promises to keep the
championship in La Grande. The
preliminaries are attracting much at
tention and should be very interest
ing. . Al (Bridges, the big boilermaker
who was booked to wrestle Pat Foley
for the local amateur heavyweight
title, will appear against Soldier
Plant in an exhibition glove contest.
Mr. Foley is unable to wrestle owing
to an attack of "pets" of the affec
tionate variety and Mr. Plant of Com
pany M has kindly consented to give
an exhibition of tho manly art.
The Lottes-Poaro affair will be
good, naturally there is considerable
difference of opinion as to tho super

teresting as they are both aggressive,
evenly matched and mix it from the

The pictures will start at the usual
time and the wrestling preliminaries
will begin at 8:30. .
Ladies are especially invited. The
show will be a clean high-class ath

Jack O'Neill, the local wrestler who
will defend1 his claim to the champion
ship of the Northwest at 175 pounds
against John Berg tonight at the Ar
cade theatre, is a native of Michigan
and began his wrestling career as a
Cornish wrestler when 16 years old
and within the year he won the third
prize in competition with the best
men in Northern Michigan.
A few years later he located in
Chicago and associated himself with
the Y. M. C. A. of that city where
he learned "Catch as Catch Can"
style wrestling under Prof. Smith,
who was instructor of that institution
at that time. '.
' His first professional match was in
Grand Forks whore he won from
Fred Fair, of Rolla, North Dakota. -
Soon after he challenged D. A.. Mc
Millan at that time, all style world's
wrestlinsr champion. McMillan ac
cepted they met in Minneapolis and 1
O'Neill won two straight falls, catch
as catch can style wrestling.
Later he met and defeated Chas.
Moth, of Pittsburg, soon lifter he
won the northwest championship andi
a gold medal at Missoula, Mont., in a
tournament defeating, among others,
not. Lewis, recognized at that time
as one of the best heavy weights in
the game.
A little later he defended his claim
of northwest champion against all
comers at Spokane taking first money
and a gold medal.
He wrestledi in -Canada meeting and
defeating the best men in his class
over there. Won from Jack Carkeek i
and Rowett in the copper region in I
northern Michigan, beating West,'
Pevey Jack, Donar and others. t
He got a draw with Dan McLeod
who held the world's championship at (
that time. He won over Farmer ,
Burns, urns getting the first fall in 1
about an hour, O'Neill taking the sec-,
one and third. '
He soon after met Jack Aleen in
Great Falls, Mont.: requiring two
hours to get the two falls. He met
Haila Dali the 300 pound Turk in Se-'
attle in a handicap match in which
he has thrown in an hour. The Turk
returned to Constantinople after tour
ing this country without losing a fall.
Two years ago O'Neill wrestled
Bob Peterson, then champion heavy
weight wrestler of Alaska ,in the i
armory at Albany, Ore., winning two
falls in ten minutes. He met I. A.
Johnson, of St. Paul, Minn., cham
pion heavyweight strong man and
wrestler at the Arcade theatre, this
city, beating the big man twice in 28 1
minutes. He defeated John Berg in
their match March 23 by taking two .

and expects to retain his claim to the j
light heavyweight championship of
the northwest in his return match
