near the depot where the flagpole had
been erected. The flagpole was the
contribution of the O.-W. R. & N. Co. j
The speakers spoke from a flatcar
which had been decorated with flags
and seats provided for the epeakers.
Postmaster E. E. JJragg was chair
man of the day and appropriatedly in
troduced the speakers and carried out
the program like clockwork. 1
Bishop O'Reilly was not able to be
present on account of illness. His
place in the pivgram was taken by
A. W. Perley, of the O.-W. R. N. Co.,
who spoke 'briefly and forcibly upon
the duties of citizens in the present
crisis.
C I. Smith, O.-W. R. & N. agri
culturist, painted a beautiful picture
of the flag raising on Lookout Moun
tain at the Battle of Chatanooga and
declared that the patriotic duty of
all Americans who did not go to the
fron was to increase the food produc
tion of the nation so as to sustain the
soldiers, whether Americans or Allios
who were fighting the battles of hu
manity. Dr. M .K. Hall presented in clear
concise fashion the opportunity of do
ing patriotic service by joining the
Rod Cross, whose work in peace and
war he described.
A. L. Palmer made a brilliant ora
tion, paying tribute to the fliag and
urging upon all tne necessity of keep
ing it unstained and unsullied as it
had been in the great crisis of '78,
,12, '48, '98.
The speaker of the day, C. E. An
derson, told of the need of present day
patriotism, and on behalf of the O.-W.
shopmen thanked the public for their
participation in the great patriotic
event, and the O.-W. R. & N. for their
co-operation in presenting the men
and the public the 'beautiful flagpole.
The flag was then raised by the G. A.
R. and Company M in true military
fashion, the thousands assembled
cheered as the beautiful flag floated
to that breeze, and all assembled then
pledged in serious and solemn fash
ion their allegiance to the 'Stars and
Stripes. The Boy Scouts then sang

Scouts and Y. M. C. A., all of whom
turned out in large numbers.
The seventh division, W. A. Rhodes,
marshal, was made up of the Broth
erhaad of Ixicomotive Engineers,
Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen,
Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen,
Order of Railway Conductors, Knights
and Lady Maccabees and citizens.
Immediately after the parade the

and he thrilled the audience with a
stirring address telling of the justica

was not waging an aggressive war but
defending itself against aggression,
land fighting to maintain its rights
for life, liberty and happiness as it
had in the days of '76.
The hands played, the crowd dis
persed, and the exercises concluded ,
with the throng dispersing feeling
that the community was the better
for their expression of their patriot
ism and their loyalty to the flag that ,
was felt In every heart, young or
old.
