Hyman H. Cohen, market editor of
tho Journal and considered one of the
best men in his line on the coast. The
story concerns the northwest wheat
market and, because prices are Hear
ing Civil War quotations of 60 years
ago, we believe it of particular inter
est.

Portland, Ore., April 18. (United
Press) The week in the grain trade
has been all that could have been de
sired from the standpoint of those
who had cereals to sell.
Those who were not of a specula
tive mind either buyer or seller
were able to soe qui to clearly that in
the face of the extreme shortage of
wheat throughout the world at this
timo, together with tho fact that the
winter wheat crop outlook Is the,
smallest known for many seasons,
that there could be no outcome what
ever except higher prices unless per
haps speculative interests on the bear
side were poworfuj enough to force
declines.
It must bo ropcated again that
wheat prices aro destined to reach
till higher figures if peace is de
clared. While 1 realize that thi3 view
is contrary to that entertained by
many of the. world's, experts In the
marketing game, it must be borne in
mind that a very large percentage of
the world has been famished for
bread and breadstuff's since the war
began, and that it will take some time
to appease tho appetite of the con
sumers in this regard.
The moment that peace is declared.
Germany, Austria, Holland, Greece,
Turkey and other nations will grab
for the (remaining supplies of wheat.
There is only one bearish factor in
sight. If the United States govern
ment should take hold of food sup
plies and make an artificially lower
value. .This is possible in view of the
famished condition of the trade.

HOW TO RESPECT THE FLAG.

except that in inclement weather the

The same rules apply when to the
color or to the standard is sounded as
when the National Anthom is played.
When played by an Army band, the
National Anthem shall be played
through without repetition of any
part not required to be repeated to
make it complete.
