Mir. and Mrs. Jas. McKinnis were visitors at the Savoy yesterday. Ladd Canyon News Ladd Canyon, Ore, April 7. (Spe cial) Her parents, and some friend have heard iirom Helen Peebler nearly every day since she went to tlie Mc Lain Orthopedic sanatorium, at St. Louis for treatment for spinal-menen- gitis. She is now able to place he:- feet flatly on the floor since having a cord in one ankle severed. She takes foot and various other exercises on seventeen different electrical machines for a period of three hours each morn ing. She states that there are now two hundred children there for treat ment, that it is a fine big institution, and that she likes it there very well. Henry McCIure, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCIure, who was op erated upon at Hot Lake by Dr. Phy, for appendicitis, has been home for some time and is getting, along very nicely. Mrs. Wm. Banton entertained tho Get-Together Club members very pleasantly at her home March 22. Most of the members were present and everyone had a lovely afternoon. Mrs. Benj. Bainbridge was tho hostess to the same club Thursday af ternoon. A baby girl arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Engel, March 23. Everybody had a fine time at the St. Patrick's dance at E. C. Fields. The last one was a sack apron and overall dance. Of course a big tifnc was had by all. (Special) A Union Pacific System Food Pre paredness Campaign special train un der auspices Oregon Agricultural College Extension Service will visit La Grande on Wednesday, April 18, on an offensive-defensive campaign against the high cost of living due to America's coming participation in the war. Better production of family foods by utilization of back yards and waste places in intensive vegetable and poultry growing, better use of the product by canning and storing for I the rainy day, and kitchen economy by rescuing from waste the vast quanti ties of human food that leak out through the kitchen sink and the gar bage can, are the objectives of the campaign. The train will consist of a baggage car and a coach, which will be equip ped by the Extension Service of the Agricultural College and operated by the O.-W. R. & N. Railway Company over its lines from Portland to Bend, Wasco, Milton, Enterprise and Baker, slopping at tho larger towns. The aid of commercial clubs, parent-teacher circles, high schools and other civic improvement bodies, will be sought in making the demonstrations available to the largest possible number of per sons. M. O. Evans, Jr., is now mak ing arrangements for the demonstra- I t;ons. I In addition to lectures explaining j methods of growing vegetable crops, gathering, canning and storing them, j an exhibit of garden plans, for lots of l different sizes, the best kind of plants , to be grown in the district and meth I ods of tillage, will be carried in the brggage car. Canning demonstrations will be given, showing simple and in expensive ways of preserving vege tables, fruits and meats. Food values, their economical uses and substitution of cheaper for the more expensive foods without loss of nutrition value, and especially sub stitution for meats, will be considered by the home economic spccilists. Among other things, tho very latest wrinkles in cooking will be explained. The poultry lectures will be supple mented by exhibits showing model back-yard poultry plants pens, hous es and equipment such as nests, brood ers, incubators, etc. with methods of feeding and handling which are prac ticed by tho College Poultry depart ment with their world-chnmpions hens. The following people will accompany the train: Prof. R. P. Hotzel, Extension direc tor; a representative of the O.-W. R. & N., in charge of the train; Prof. A. G. Bouquet, head of the College vegetable gardening work, first week, R. W. Alien, sup't. Hermiston Ex periment Station, second week; Miss Helen C'owpill, assistant state leader of club work, canning; C. C. Lamb, ex it nsion poultry specialist, poultry; and iMiss A. Grace Johnson, instructor of domestic science, home cooking. Ad vance arrangements are in chnrge of M. 0.
