This t includes the 4 million dollars sought in the new German loan, subscription for which closed today, j It was last December that tho Brit ish Chancellor of the Exchequer asked for the latest $1,948,000,000. At the same time the call wont out for a mil lion more men of nil ranks. This mil lion men brings the total number of British subjects under arms and in training, up to 5 million. Germany beginning of the war to date are esti mated at approximately 23,000,000 men. Of these casualties Germany has suffered slightly more than 4 mil lion. England slightly more than 2 million, Franco about 3 million and a half. It is estimated that England's in terest on her present war debt for one year is well over $200,000,000. Germany and France face deficits in proportion to this. For months Germany and England have been mobilizing hundreds of thousands of women to work cither di rectly behind the fighting lines, else where along the fronts or at home in what is known1 as civil war service. The voluntary period of enlistment for service expires in Germany today and tomorrow compulsory service will be inaugurated. A. L. Meader, a hotel man, arrived last night from Bend. (United Press) "Bill" Hayward, veteran trainer of athletes at the University of Oregon, has sig nified his intention of enlisting in case war is declared. He may join the sec ond company, coast artillery, Oregon National Guard, to which several of his most promising athletes belong. "We won't have much of a track team anyhow," said Bill with a grim smile. "Since most of the members of the team already belong to the company. If tho boy 8 go away with the com pany I'll go along with them and keep the men training." More Milk Cuts Table Bills One keen La Grande lady with several children has recently put into practical use the theory that all experts have come to recognize, namely, that wholesome milk is just the thing to cut high cost of living.
