Press) The kkldies and the birds are
going to have a big day May 5. That
is the diay many governors have set
aside as Bird Day in the schools. Just
137 years ago that day was born John
James Audobon, whose name now
means bird protection. There are
650,000 American boys and girls,
helpers of the Audobon societies in
protecting the birds, who will take
part in the celebration. They are full
Hedged members and are known as
Juniors. Each child paying a dime
gets a membership badge and beau
tifully colored pictures of birds so
they can recognize their feathered
friends. Thousands of new young
sters ar expected to jon the societies
between now and May 5. Teachers
are organizing them throughout the
country, simply by sending their
names to Gilbert Pearson, general
secretary, 197-1 Broadway, New York.
Some of the governors are taking an
interest in the celebration which may
lead to a National Bird Day in '18.

A majority of Elgin business men
believe that the motor car service will
benefit Elgin in a business way, but
if benefits are to accrue the business
heads of the town must be alive to
the opportunity and go out after the
business. A littla more advertising,
a little more "pep", more attractive
stores, courteous clerks and good
goods are things to bo considered El

The Increased Rates
The railroads are asking for high
er rates to moot increased expenses
on account of the Adnmson law. The
country will not object to paying
these increased rates if it is shown
they ore necessary. But first it
would like to know if the roads will
provide sufficient rolling stock to do
the work ofTered them if they get this
increased revenue? It should also
make it a condition precedent that the
roads ugrce to handle such business
as was ofTered them. The raising of
rates without this should not be even

Conductor Is Veteran.
Baker, Ore., April 3. (Special)
Signifying that he has served 20
years as conductor, David W. E.
Baird, who is known to everyone who
has occasion to use the Surnpter Val
ley railroad, is wearing four gold
bands on his coat sleeve, one for each
five years. He has been on the Sump
tor Valley during his entire service as
conductor, coming to Baker 22 years
ago from Ogden, when, as he snys,
there wasn't much hero to boast
about.

Squatty Mine Locomotive Works In
Low Drift b.
To meet conditions in a certain coal
mine whose galleries are very low, a
special electric locomotive which ex
tends only 26 in. above the rails has
been built. It is fitted with two trolley
pblcs, one on each side, and a 300 foot
reel of cable that is employed in pas
sages too low to permit overhead con
ductors to be strung safely. The free
end of this insulated line is supplied
with a hook which the operator Blips
over the trolley wire in one of the main
levels when he is about to enter a
small side drift. As the locomotive pro
ceeds the reel unwinds. When the dir
ection is reversed and the;distance re
traced, the reel winds automatically,
recoiling the cable rapidly, so that it
docc not slacken enough to cause inter

Farmers Till Railroad's Right Of Way,
A very practical conservation move
ment has been undertaken by the Chi
cago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad by
inducing farmers along its right of
way to cultivate the railroad's land
enjoining their farms. According to the
April Popular Mechanics Magazine,
over GOO country dwellers took advan
tage of this plan last year, paying tho
nominal fee of $5, which entitles them
to utilize the land for an indefinite
period.
This soil, which is usually very rich

One keen La Grande lady with several children
has recently put into practical use the theory that
all experts have come to recognize, namely, that
wholesome milk is just the thing to cut high cost
of living.
This particular lady buys twice the amount of
milk she used to, but tho saving on other foods
is greatly in excess of the added milk bill.
