La Grande, March 9, 1917. (To the Editor) The action of Senator Lane in joining a coterie of senatorial highwaymen to "hold up" the govern ment's prepuredness policy, at a criti cal moment in our international af fairs, has caused general astonish ment and bitter humiliation. But it must not bo forgotten that these eleven senators represent the covert sentiment of a very large and powerful party in the United States. This party can bo expected to uid and abet any action, no matter how un patriotic, to thwart any movement for an adequate preparation for war. Not only does this party renounce every kind of military power when it is exercised with a view of aggrcs ' sive action, but it will not so much as countenance any show of force even for the purpose of insisting that jus tice and international law shnll pre vail, that the weak and innocent shnll not be exploited, and thnt a quiet and pence-loving people shnll enjoy the privilege of being quiet. If the High Priest of military auto cracy should come out against us with swords and staves, these apostles of amity would put up their long, drip ping red tongues into their scabbards and Bubmit without so much as lop ping off the car of the High Priest's servant. They would strike the sword from the hand of the hero and substitute therefor the emblem of a pink-eyed turtle dove, stuffed with hot mush. All true Amoricuns are lovers of peace peace which is the triumph of principle, but these doves' down dreamers woud have us go to any lengths, even to groveling ' servility and spineless non-resistance. I, for one, cannot understand and by what right these people claim to be true Americans. Certainly they are not true to American traditions; they are false to American ideals. The whole history of the UniteJ States bristles with bayonets resist ance to oppression, armed protest against arbitrary power. The men who established this gov ernment, the men who bequeathed to us these benign institutions of the free, loved the principles of justice and liberty, and loved them with such an overmastering passion that they were willing to fight for them, and to die for them, if need be "in silent heaps without a sound." This country was founded by a body of patriots never surpassed in the his tory of the world; men who not only had shed their blood in the buttles of the frco, but upon whose valiant hearts the principles of liberty had been impressed by hundreds of years ol hereditary struggle, and who, upon all the fields of freedom's bloody con flicts, could point to the graves of their ancestors to attest their right to be culled the chosen guardians of a WANTED To buy ton million feot of lumber, or will furnish casli to operate your mill and market the prod uct. The privileges of American citizen ship are not the gracious gift of be nevolent powers; they were reaped with the sword from fields of suffer ing and of blood. Can anyone conceive of Washing ton as an advocate of this modern doc trine of none-resistance? Listen to his admonition to Congress in 1793 words whose wisdom and foresight the progress of events has so amply confirmed: "There is a rank due the United SUites among nations which will be withheld by the reputation of weakness If we desire to secure peace it must be shown that we are at all times ready for war." Can there be the slightest doubt where Adams would stand if he were alive today? Or Jefferson, or Hamil ton, whose sword rattled on the floor when he sat down ,to draft the con stitution ? Grant, Lee, Sherman, Sheridan, Stonewull Jackson all were lovers of peace and haters of war, but each of Pony, mare, weighing shout 900, blue roan, lazy J. Lincoln clearly saw that the prin ciples on which this government was founded always had been, and always would be, a seat of war; and like a groat high priest officiating at the altars of freedom, he dedicates the Amercan people to tho "unfinished task" of maintaining them and trans mitting them undiminished from our hnnd to the enjoyment of coming gen erations. To this "unfinished task'' the flam ing spirit of our fighting forefathers culls us today. Not to us, any more than to them, is granted the soft privilege of polticnl repose. We hope that the United States may be kept out of this colossal conflict, if she can, with honor, successfully ren der the service she owes to humanity. But if the mantels of the patriots nre to descend to a lot of forked radishes in pantaloons, soft parlor soldiers, who are too proud or too sentimental or too white livered to fight when our sacred rights nre insolently challenged and imperiled, then I foresee fchat the bitter awakening against which Wash ington wnrned us will not long be post poned. Come it will if America in vites it by a policy of innocuous and spineless non-resistance. Besides and beyond all this, what sort of a nation will this bo when the first thought of an American is how to avoid danger, how to save his skin, bow to shirk the never-ending conflict between liberty and tyranny, between democracy and despotism, between lawful right and wnnton wrong?
